It's not a popularity contest, and there isn't a certain list that you need to watch to be allowed in the scifi club.
TV is supposed to be about watching something fun, and then talking about it with people. Not consuming massive amounts of episodes to be allowed to have an opinion.
Watch what interests you. Stop thinking that other people liking or disliking something you like or dislike matters.
The original BSG was great, and the 2000s BSG adapted it and its spinoff amazingly well. It constantly blows my mind how great that adaptation is, and how great the original is.

Been watching the 2000 BSG show, the miniseries was great and the first episode was tense as fuck, but I get annoyed at some details like people using normal looking pistols when you have perfectly serviceable future guns on the hands of the fighter pilots
that and "dont shoot her! she's a cylon clone but it's okay because she SAID she was pregnant!"
that was silly, among other things
I should check out the original series, at least at first glance it seemed to be continuing from the original show rather than rebooting it

I love it myself, great episodes in there, but not sure if I would recommend because of what you mentioned: the camp factor it has every now and then is a love or hate kind of thing.
Not like TNG is free of it at this point mind you, but I'd say it's more tolerable.

Oh yeah, and if you are into movies they are a different matter, they're definitively worth a watch, especially 2, 3 and 4.
The first one is amazing too, but can feel a bit on the slow side, which most people might not like very much.
Avoid TNG movies at all cost.

It's not continuing from the original. It's a total retelling/reboot. The phrase they always used was "reimagining", but that's just a fancy way of saying reboot. The original is great, but the 2000s adaptation is better.
Laziness? Your entire hobby is sitting in one spot watching a screen. TV isn't a competition, it's the thing you kill time with.
This is a shit tier opinion, of someone who didn't pay attention during the show, and didn't watch the original. There was never a shift into prophecy, it was there from the very start. You just hoped that it wasn't going to be that, because you never watched the original. You never liked BSG, you just liked grimdark pew pew pew.
Removing the religion from BSG, is like removing the Force from Star Wars. It's a fundamental aspect of the story.
