Guy, I just realized I don't have a favorite Doctor anymore.

I was watching last week's episode with my daughter (8 yo). She asked who my favorite Doctor was and I realized I didn't have one anymore. I started watching the reboot with my Dad who is now passed. I loved Eccleston but then Tennant won me over. Matt Smith was the only Doctor my daughter would watch, until Jodi Whitaker. After seeing a Doctor that she could see herself in, my daughter was willing to go back and watch everything from the beginning of the reboot on...even the old man Peter Capaldi Doctor. The more we talked about them, the more I could see their continuity despite different writers, different actors, and somewhat different personalities. I love the seriousness and slight impatience of Eccleston. I love the charisma and how flippant Tennant was. I love the child wise beyond his years in Smith. I love the anger and intensity of Capaldi. I love the unassuming but still going to save the day Whitaker. I do think her writers have given her less room to differentiate her Doctor. But I still see the common elements shared among all the Doctors in her; compassion, bravery, intelligence, and determination. I could do a similar run down on companions. But for brevity I won't.

TL:DR:
Anyway, the point of this post is lets rise above the toxic fandom. Let's love the Doctor and let each one shine for what they are and what they all are.

The Doctor is apparently a black female child refugee from some alternate universe, who came in all alone abandoned and was taken in by a white surrogate mother who experimented on her, and then injected herself with her DNA so she could also become immortal. Using this child refugee blood they used it for a foundation of the Timelord's citadel (the upper class of Gallifrey.) There, screencap it and take it to your other /pol/acks.

I'd give some credence that this wasn't just BBC trying to retcon DW to make the story always woke, but the fact they called the kid a refugee was just so pointless and stupid. I was also against it at first, but I think Moffat made it work with the dialogue at the end of Name of the Doctor. It's an answer that works to me for "what would the Doctor do if he felt like he needed to be part of the biggest war of his life?" (given it couldn't be won by the conventional means).

60s sci-fi show about a renegade alien who stole a half-broken space and time machine he can't pilot very well to travel the universe with his granddaughter. For some reason still unknown, he hides his real name and decides to instead call himself The Doctor (hence the show's title). He is eventually found out on Earth by two teachers who figure out he's an alien fucking around traveling space and he kidnapds them not to have any witnesses, but ends up softening to them and taking on mankind's best attributes. He eventually leaves them and his granddaughter behind to live on their lives but decides to keep travelling the universe himself, this time to help people and he becomes much more influential to the history of the universe than he ever anticipated. Being a Time Lord (a high rank at the planet of Gallifrey where he comes from) he has the ability to "regenerate" every time he nearly dies, at the cost of randomly changing his body and personality into something out of his control, essentially having 13 lives. The current showrunner retconned that into him having many incarnations before the ones we know, creating a bunch of plot holes for the obvious reason of saying the doctor was originally a black refugee Gallifreyan girl.

Cybermen aren't very good villains to begin with. they were interesting ideas at the beginning, even though that as well was basically just daleks again (Men hide in suits of armor and lose emotions and that's bad). after that they were literally just big robots with robotic voices who killed people. Nu who cybermen are just shitty robots that don't do anything other than shoot or get shot at.

It’s a science fiction show which revolves around time travel. Originally it was conceived with a more educational bent but became more focused on the science fiction aspects as time went on. The main character, the Doctor, possesses the ability to regenerate his body upon death, giving him a new appearance and personality, which is used every couple of years as a way of revitalising the show.

The ever-changing nature of the cast and crew meant the show could dip in and out of pretty much any genre. Historical fiction, police procedural, war drama, high concept science fiction, etc. This helped to keep it fresh but also meant the quality could vary pretty wildly.

After a particularly bad string of episodes in the late 80s (although it started getting good again towards the very end) the show was cancelled. After a failed attempt at a continuation in the 90s through a made for TV movie, it was brought back properly in 2005, remaining in the same continuity and giving nods to the old show but staying mostly accessible to new audiences. This iteration of the show became very popular in the late 2000s/early 2010s, in part thanks to the Doctor being played by two younger, more conventionally attractive actors in a row, and the writing taking a turn towards soap opera style melodrama and camp.

The only good thing about this image is it reminded me that Valeyard posting used to be a thing.

Cybermen are good as internal conflict (How much are you willing to give up to surive, and is it really worth it) but lame as external threat where they are just robot zombies. They started from some guy's phobia of medical technology, but now it's just not that impressive. You can probably give them some sort of oppressive industrial feel, but it would take decent budget for sets.

Stopped watching after Spyfall Part 1, I lost any desire to continue watching and after The Timeless Children I doubt anyone could bring me back to the show.

Gotta say, not really a fan of this twist. I much prefer the Doctor being just a Timelord among many who wanted to explore the universe instead of the secret progenitor of the race and also part of their black-ops unit.

That and having her memory of Gallifrey tarnished. The Doctor missing his/her home dearly while also having acknowledging how their living so long warps them was compelling. Saving Gallifrey was this huge event even if the Time Lords were flawed. Now everyone's just dead again and turns out they lied the whole time.

Daleks are fascist (superior race, all others must die) and Cybermen are commies (all should be the same, upgraded). It's just mid-20th century sci-fi with some twists. Their original appearance is freaky as hell, but nuWho are indeed just Stormtroopers that look like Iron Man.

Bros I just rewatched An Adventure to honor the great Bill Hartnell after he was shafted and thrown under the bus by Chibnall.
And I gotta say, it's pretty kino. It's no perfect but it focuses on the things that matter and really understands the bit of magic and love that the show had since day 1 and how important the lead role always had in that. It's clearly written by a fan and it's one of the times that that's better.

That's what The Doctor had to say about the cybermen in Revenge of the Cybermen and honestly that's how I liked them. The Cyberwar is long over, Mondas is gone and the Cybermen are basically reduced to increasingly desperate attempts at either petty revenge or gaining some kind of power in the universe again. That's why initially I liked the lone Cyberman, it was a move back to that concept and it worked pretty well right up until he revealed his retarded plan and Chibbers unceremoniously killed him off as soon as he'd served his purpose in the story.
You can't really have the Cybermen have a motivation beyond "Turn everybody into Cybermen" and yeah thats kind of boring but you can at least have them approach it in interesting ways like fighting Nazis for control of living metal or launching a terrorist attack on the space UN or practically anything beyond "Use the death particle to kill everyone lel."
