My uncle was a cook on a destroyer in Vietnam, said it was boring as fuck.
But then in the same family, I had a great uncle who served in the Pacific in WWII, and never spoke about it to anyone, he'd just shake his head, sadly. We know he lost his brother there, and he might have been in some of the big battles like shown on The Pacific.
And then we had a friend of the family who was a MASH surgeon in Vietnam, who said it was a hundred times worse than what they show in the movies.

So, the big fear and cause of PTSD in Vietnam especially was that you never got a break. The Viet Cong made sure nowhere was safe, at least for SF like Rambo that were far from friendly bases. The weather and insects and constant threat of mines and snipers made you feel like you never got a break, so when he comes home and just wants peace, that all goes to hell when he gets hassled by his own people.

PTSD wasn't a thing until the 70's. Back in WW2 they called it "shell shock" and thought it would wear off. My grandpa fought in the Korean war and was shot in the head and had undiagnosed PTSD. I didn't grow up during the vietnam era, but the idea that a police chief would just walk up to a veteran of any war and start trash talking them and giving them a hard time was just too unbelievable for me. Was the stigma against Vietnam vets REALLY that bad? Why? It's not like the vast majority of soldiers even agree on the upper echelons of politics behind a war. They just go where they're ordered. I would have thought a police chief of all people would hold a veteran in higher regard.

Also Rambo was a war hero. Not simply a veteran.

sorta, there were a couple of things that made it miserable for the soldiers.

1) Army rules for combat stress == shell shock. See the army didn't understand shell shock yet, and thought you could resolve it by "vacationing" the soldiers by giving them frequent breaks away from combat. Turns out this is hilariously exactly how you cause shell shock. The emotional whiplash from tense jungle fighting followed within 24 hours of a weekend in Thailand or Hong Kong or Japan, then after fucking their brains out, going right back into jungle warfare 24 hours later was directly responsible for the insanely high rates of shell shock in Vietnam vets. The soldiers with the lowest rate of shell shock were in the USMC, reason? no out of theater vacations, they weren't depressurizing then getting back into the shit over and over again.

2) Drug Use / Draft - This was a war almost universally hated by america's young (though the public at large was mostly for it during the 60's) most of the US Army troops fighting it were drafted and against their will. Worse, drug use became rampant in the barracks as discipline broke down (see part 1 for some of the reasons for this). Many us army combat troops, high on drugs and angry on being in country and stressed turned to war crimes, insubordination and drugs to relieve their stress. Tell me how well adjusted those men would be coming home?

3) CivilWar / Jungle Fighting - This was a civil war which is bad because it's literally brother against brother. Combine this with the dense jungles and you couldn't tell who was a friend or foe. Imagine going to battle to protect a town with half the town behind you aiming a riffle at your back. That will fuck you up.
