Considering its basically silent comedy, the laugh track is kinda needed, because they dont have the timing of witty dialogue to carry the scene along.

It's either laugh track or music, which I think the Bean movies did, but I dont think music on its own would have worked for the short tv skits.

A laugh track is just laugh sound effects being added in in post, the live audience has an actual audience reacting to the show. You'll hear individual voices reacting to gags, or someone seeing where a joke is going just ahead of everyone else.

Atkinson makes millions every year just from Bean royalties. It's a very popular show worldwide cos there's almost no dialogue, no need for dubbing. It's always been a popular thing to show on airlines around the world for instance.

The cartoon is fantastic; I watched it with my nieces and nephews to get them into the Bean character, then put on the classic IRL episodes.
