I can never figure out if I hated Lucky because I thought he sucked as a character, or because he wasn't someone I could consider my self-insert to bang Luanne.

I mean, I think Lucky was incredibly unfunny and the writers seemed convinced we all wanted to see him all the time. Plus because of the way he was drawn, he seemed way too old for her (I don't know how old he was supposed to be).

Mostly I preferred that in her (rare) appearances in seasons 6 and 7 she seemed to be slowly improving her life a bit, and even after she dropped out of college and went back into hairdressing she was at least moving forward, and then they hook her up with Lucky and that's the end of any character development. Though all the characters sort of froze around that time.

For me it's a bit of both. The show spent a lot of its time with Luanne showing that despite her many failures she was making genuine, honest-to-god attempts to better herself and rise above just being trailer trash, even if she was grossly misled every single time, such as wanting to go to beauty school when it's established early on she's actually really good with working on cars.
Then Lucky comes along and suddenly all of that is dropped in favour of her getting together with the only character I'd legitimately call a "hillbilly" in every sense of the word, who the writers kept around because they liked Tom Petty and his only joke was "lol pee pee money from Costco" and that shit got old fast. So even if I wanted to self-insert, I wouldn't want to do it through Lucky because he's just a shit character on every level.
It's a wet fart of an ending for Luanne. If she had to get married, they could've at least let her marry someone who would encourage her to continue bettering herself, instead she gets knocked up and she's just gonna be another trailer trash mom, albeit a much sweeter one than her own.

The fact that Brittany Murphy married a guy her KotH colleagues considered unsuitable (Kathy Najimy has talked about him more or less the way Peggy talked about Lucky) and her career went to hell and she died shortly after KotH was canceled, probably doesn't help.

Brittany Murphy isn't Luanne of course, though she spent a lot of time trying to turn herself into a blonde bombshell *like* Luanne, but it's not easy to separate them.

It's a realistic ending for who she is. I know many, many hot lower class white girls who ended up in that exact scenario despite having the potential for much more.

Sad fact is most people will take the path of least resistance, and getting pregnant and having a man who at least pays the bills is a lot easier than making it on your own

What makes you think Hank isn't based? And on that note, what makes Bill based and Hank not? Bill was a chad when he was a teenager, but nowadays he's a doormat.

Lucky didn't even pay the bills though. He was established as a lazy bum living off his Costco settlement and by the end of the show they never bothered to change it or show him trying to do his share of the work.

Lucky was just one of those "creator's pet" characters that the writers seemed to think we would love even though he never did anything to make us like or respect him.

The whole storyline would have worked better if they'd created a new character to be with Luanne instead of taking this guy, but they loved Tom Petty and were just too flattered that he was willing to keep coming back.

Maybe so, but even if KOTH was fairly grounded for a cartoon, that doesn't mean everything had to be realistic all the time.
In real life a man like Hank would certainly be much, much slower at embracing new ideas than what is portrayed in the show, for example, and he would probably try to distance himself further from people like Dale and Bill, despite them being friends when it's made clear they aren't all there in the head for his and his family's sake. But this being a cartoon, he never does that.
So even if its a realistic ending for someone in Luanne's position, it's a pretty grim ending for someone who's been there from the start, especially considering how much of a good person she was, the amount of potential she had, and the fact KOTH had a pretty standard "feel good" ending for everyone else at that big, final BBQ.
