I feel like the protest/social change angle is the worst part of this book. Granted, it's VERY rare that I feel like it's earned. Was terrible in Joker too.

Yeah, I just think the assertion that they would've brutalized Barb and gotten away with it if she were black is kind of clumsy. She's a popular city official. This book is set in a grimdark future, but I struggle to buy the idea that people would just shrug off a viral clip of a beloved activist politican getting beaten half to death in the current year because she's black.
