Foxes are perfectly normal canines like a more aesthetic form of coyote. That said they seem to cause some sort of mental illness in certain human beings. It's like toxoplasmosis but worse.

That just seems like how asia has always draws foxes in their media.

They make the eyes have that eyeshadow look and they end in a point, instead of the round shape the west tends to give them.
It's a pretty old anime and I don't think it was all that popular outside of japan or latin america.

I remember as a kid I was playing The first Sly Cooper game on PS2. A really fun game which I'd enjoy to. Carmelita in that game was already one of my favorite characters along with the Cooper gang. When I saw her anime version, I was determined to clear 100% of the game to unlock the anime ending cutscene and I glad I did.
