It's weird how Peanuts even when I was growing up was entirely unrelatable. A neighbourhood of kids just hanging about doing shit was at the end of being a thing in society and there just aren't kids running around meeting each other because they're too busy doing organized activities or just staying indoors.

It's too much to ask of families to have a parent at home who can provide basic things like a bathroom or some snacks, or own a house, or own a house with a large enough yard. Church attendance has been steadily tanking which means they can't even get youth groups together for lack of kids. No joke, playgrounds are empty during the day. Not to mention the fear of broken liquor bottles and needles which are a very real fucking thing in addition to the discarded clothes and evidence that transients have been through the place every morning. Schools have tasked volunteers to clean the schoolyard every morning before school starts because of how much bullshit is left on playgrounds overnight.

It's so fucking weird how much kid culture is imported from the Internet now. The stories, the songs, the jokes, and vulgar rhymes passed down are all gone.

Yeah drugs really did a number on kids being able to play outside. Now all they have are minecraft servers. I like games as much as the next guy but the idea that modern kids will have memories that comprise of mostly screen pixels and polygons just doesn't sit right with me.

I felt like Peanuts was useful precisely because it was sad. Kids grow up sheltered without any practice failing and witnessing sad moments and they adjust poorly when they become adults and discover that despite all the warnings the world is much grimmer than they ever imagined.

I'm not saying Peanuts was great about it but it gave kids a taste for non-optimal situations. Watching Charlie Brown fuck up sometimes through no fault of his own, or watching Linus reflect on something that a kid otherwise would not pause and think about, or seeing Lucy fuck on people as a demonstration of pure cruelty - these are harsh lessons and Peanuts braces a kid for that. Peppermint Patty was kinda a shitter at times but I don't think it was out of malice, and Marci balanced that out.

Yeah I think peanuts does an alright job at it. It doesn't lift the veil completely I know some of the cartoons touch heavier subjects though. But I think the comics themselves show enough harshness that a kid can handle, nothing scar worthy.

Definitely one of the good ones.
