Let's turn our eyes back, and then move slowly forward as we look at the start of Green Lantern when it first dared to ask: "What if we add Lensman to this shit?"
Green Lantern Story time
They never could have imagined how many explanations and sagas would come from "why did Abin Sur need a spaceship?"
The lantern is not yet universally called a lantern. Just a Power Battery. Also a bit different than what its iconic look will be.
Yeah, Hal actually designing the flight simulator is something that never really comes up ever again and is dropped from every new take on his orgin after this.
Also at the start, the symbol was a simple drawing of the Lantern.
. . . Nope not going there.
And at this moment bringing called Green Lantern is a uniquely Hal thing, not something all of the Space Patrolmen use. They don't really have a name at the moment.
This scene is a swipe from the 1950s movie THIS ISAND EARTH, where a green glow took control of a private jet.
Be ready for lots of suits and ties in the silver age stuff.
At the moment these two are close. At the moment.
Interesting how early on the ring's beam doesn't tend to form full constructs as it tends to just be well a beam in the rough shape needed to do the job. This is also how it often was in Alan's run. Making constructs is really something that starts more with Hal and gets backported to Alan when they do stuff with him going forward.
The beam also starts off very, jagged.
We also see a heavy focus on non-construct uses of the ring early on. Liking here going through walls and exploding bullets mid-air.
And we get our first head injury. To be fair most heroes who aren't explicitly unable to be knocked out get knocked out a lot. Though given Hal's overall power level it likely makes it stand out more.
Ice picks are at the moment the closest we get to constructs.
Yeah, it will be a LONG time till Mr. Ferris becomes a major member of the cast.
You can almost see this last page in a rom-com. Also, the Lantern is already changing, a lip being placed around the lens.
I love the second panel.
I'm sure this will not be self-destructive to his relationship with Carol.
There is that thing when you have powers with a weakness, that weakness will show up everywhere.
Yeah like nowadays we would get a net that looks like it's made of green rope or something, here its clearly just meant to be light in the shape of a net.
Ahhh some of that classic "telling us what we can see is happening" action of the Silver Age.
You can almost hear the comedic sting music.
Shoot! Forgot the pic.
Like I said rom-com
In which Hal fights his first Super Villain.
but before that, and more importantly first space adventure!
Hal's really enjoying that fame.
.. the roots of the less... flattering way of writing Carol are already being laid.
Alan Scott's beam was usually drawn as a flame, interesting design choice/
The rom-com is just becoming a sitcom.
It's not something we see with most super heroes but Hal's Green Lantern spends a lot of time socializing with the public. You don't see the Flash or Green Arrow going on actual dates or spending the evening at a party.
Looks to me like Gil Kane had Keenan Wynn in mind when drawing the colonel.
Even though we don't have a name for Hal's organization we do have the famed "Sector 2814"
And here's where the foundation for 'wait.... why was Abin in a spaceship?" starts.
>We also see a heavy focus on non-construct uses of the ring early on
It evolves into letting the user do just about anything.
of all the luck huh? Most of Hal's run will do trade-offs between "earthbound more classic Super hero stuff" and "space adventure/space opera with a few notable exceptions.
Shoot missed again.
And the first use of the ring to translate languges.
And the first real full construct. The slow transition of the ring from "wish-granting ring because this is all riffing on Aladan" to "construct maker" starts here.
I'm sure this will have no long-term effects on the ecosystem.
And we'll never hear from them ever again.
And now for that first Super Villian. He's... not the best.
We start to move to Hal's GL stuff getting in the way of his love life.
Yeah, not the best costume design Kane ever did.Especially when placed right next to Hal's.
He's a very good artist.
I kind of love the exclamations they came up for people to say in order to not be religious.
And we get into the "no when we said this ring can do ANYTHING we meant it." side of things.
We are three issues in and already dealing with a nuke going off as a threat.
Like I said it can do anything.
>Power Battery
it literally says battery of power
Lots of spy stuff early on. It fades away after a bit, but comes back later.
Look Hal I know you just can't keep your boner for Carol in your pants... but if you want her to love you as you and not as GL you have to see how this is self destructive.
Seems we're mostly over the jagged look to power beam.
