The episode was badly executed and the pay-off is even worse, since Brian fully fucking knows that the family abuses Meg endlessly and forces her (as seen in the Hurricane episode) to endure their sadistic abuse so he doesn't have to deal with the fact that Lois/Peter don't love each other and despise each other at this point in their sham marriage or the fact that Chris despises his parents and them Chris for existing and trapping them in their loveless marriage since so long as Chris is alive, neither Peter and Lois can just walk away from the marriage because SOMEONE has to raise Chris (and to a lesser extent Stewie).

Even Seth knows this, since it's widely known that the whole "Here is why you suck" speech Quagmire gives Brian was done EXPLICITLY because of the backlash to this episode and the Hurricane episode.

The episode would have worked better if they had Lois, in one of her moral fag moments, dragged the family to Bible Camp only for Meg to become a huge true believer and for it to end with Meg still a Christian and Brian basically forced to STFU about his atheism because Born Again Meg is popular in the community and allows Lois something to use against the other equally snotty and self-righteous soccer moms with popular daughters Meg's age as far as Lois crowing that she had a perfect Born Again Christian daughter while Connie's mom is having to deal with the fact that the doctor blotched Connie's fifth abortion and now she's barren and Connie's family will never have grandkids.

Early Brian was just "Smart Dog who made wry comments on the stupidity of his family".
