Regardless, you can't possibly think that until the last few hundred years lifting weights for pleasure was any more accessible to the common man as learning to read and write, they had work to do and fields to plow.

Hard labor will often give you big muscles but its not in the bodybuilder shape, naturally strong people are heftier and fatter. They don't dehydrate themselves for three days to make their muscles looks big. And big muscles gained from hard labor are not strictly speaking healthy either.

Weightlifting reduces pressure on your joints which in the long run reduces risk of arthritis and other joint issues, builds muscles around your spine and teaches you to move with proper form to prevent back injuries, prevents injuries just on the grounds that stronger muscles can do more without over straining themselves, every good weightlifting routine includes flexibility training which has it's own big list of benefits especially as you get older, every good weightlifting routine is absolute dependent on good nutrition and sleep management which comes with it's own big list of benefits, it's a fact that regular exercise helps with stress management and your sleep schedule, etc...
