I missed it because I didn't realize we were still in the flashback. What were Arlong's demands? What good did Nami's mom's sacrifice even do? Nami still got kidnapped anyway. Or was it not a sacrifice situation and he just murdered the mom for kicks?
After years of the show and bounty inflation, Arlong's ransom demands don't really make much sense in the context of the world.

it was a monthly tax. Belle-mere was poor. The promise was 50,000 for kids. She paid to keep them alive. Nami was taken by arlong for her skills(to protect her village from being killed), and she was told 100 million would save them.
To live she had to deny that her children were hers which she couldn't allow herself to do
Hunter Morris
I guess Arlong's core problem is the same as most One Piece villains, they stagnate and are content with, heh, being the biggest fish in a small pond and thus start to fester?
Matthew Barnes
Collecting protection fees from the citizens, she only had enough for the girls or herself

100 thousand for every adult, 50 thousand for every child. If nobody could pay, they were killed. Bell-Mere, Nami's adoptive mother, used the funds she had to ensure Nami and Nojiko were paid for, and let herself be killed.

>What were Arlong's demands? Money. A st amount for adults and children. >What good did Nami's mom's sacrifice even do? It let her daughters stay on the island instead of being killed.

Spring-loaded hammer edit when?

... It's the first major arc in all of one piece why the fuck are you watching the fishman arc if you haven't even seen along park?

Replacing 1 episode of One Place with actual content got us to thread 7. See what less filler could do for the block?
It was literally her pride as a mother that killed her. If she disowned her children she'd have enough, as a single woman, no husband or biological kids, they'd never know and she'd have had enough money for herself. But she refused to even lie about that because that would betray her honor as a mother. She would rather die a mother than disown her children to save her own life.

It's not like they were rich.

>I missed it because I didn't realize we were still in the flashback. > What were Arlong's demands? Everyone has to pay to live. Something like 100k for every adult, 50k for every kid >Nami still got kidnapped anyway. Yes, but she lived. > Or was it not a sacrifice situation and he just murdered the mom for kicks? Nami's family was basically dirt poor. Bellmere had enough for either herself, or her kids, and decided to pay for her kids
Considering how wanted they were, obviously the ones that can be recognized in public would have to keep their skills sharp. Crocus, the lighthouse guy, lives in virtual isolation, only having to deal with any fuckers who arrive via Reverse Mountain, so he's not at much risk if someone recognizes him. Of course, he probably didn't get into many fights.

Honestly. Nami prostituting on the side makes sense and I wish it were in the story. She’s really lost a lot of personality after the timeskip.
Easton Cooper
should I also post the lead-in to one of the best moments in the series, or save that for next week?
I mean we're probably not going to cover this in anime form ever again so you might as well keep going.

Why do we have 1 thread for Naruto and 1 thread of OP discussion?

>context: After the death of Belle-mere, Arlong discovered Nami was a talented cartographer. Thus, he made a deal with her. Cocoyasi village would be safe, so long as she kept making maps for Arlong, and in time, if she obtained 100,000,000 beli, she would be able to buy the village back from Arlong. She decided to keep her deal secret from everyone except her sister, Nojiko.
