ASL is like stenographer shorthand. It's not just a direct translation, it's its own language with its own grammatical structure. Presumably you can read it faster and more accurately than you would closed captioning.

I'm more curious how this is going to work given that the simpsons characters only have four fingers.

I fucking hate deaf people. They're not all bad, but boy are the bad ones god-awful.
Just spiteful pieces of shit with such a superiority complex that they will treat anyone who isn't deaf like shit. They tend to stick with their own kind as a result, which can lead to some pretty awful situations, because it turns out hearing is actually pretty useful.

Can anyone name one instance where ASL is more useful than just transcribing what is being said with text?

Sign language is not universal, so its not like a deaf Chinese guy will understand ASL
Deaf people can read, so its not like they won't understand what is being said
Sign language is not 1 : 1 with English, so by virtue of translation inherently information is lost that wouldn't be with text
Some people aren't deaf but don't easily understand verbally spoken english, but can read, so transcripts help more people.

There is almost clearly more Hispanic and Chinese exclusive speakers in the US than ASL, why shouldn't they prioritize translating into that?

The number of deaf people who are too mentally handicapped to learn to read or speak English, but are not so handicapped they can understand ASL must be so small you have to view it with a microscope.

This is what I think everytime there is some politician speaking on TV and they make a point of putting the sign language interpreter on camera. It makes sense for the people watching in person, but TVs have closed captions. There is no reason to put that person on TV other then some sort of 'representation' brownie points.

Closed captions aren't always 100% accurate and are often truncated and it costs nothing to film a sign language person thats already there so im not sure what the big deal is.

I've lost most of my hearing, closed captions are frequently...

- Littered with errors, sometimes the captions are missing entire lines of dialog or random letters with no rhyme or reason.
- Poorly formatted. If multiple people are speaking without visible mouths it's impossible to tell who the captions are referring to.
- Inaccurate, with misspellings or wrong dialog. When I last watched Alice in Wonderland the subtitles were way off, likely adapted from the script rather than what was recorded. Captions are expected to be 100% accurate to the spoken dialog.
- Poorly presented, in rare circumstances the dialog can cover up important on-screen information. One episode of Law & Order notably covered up translated Chinese with the spoken Chinese.
- Badly timed, they are frequently 4-6 seconds behind. This is forgivable on live news but when that news repeats itself it's still out of time. When I watched Trigun the captions were consistently lagging behind.

- People who are deaf from an early age have severe literacy problems due to not being able to associate words with sounds.

Sign language is not 1:1 to English, and has different grammar rules. It's more like a shorthand using hieroglyphs. Deafness is one of the easiest, if not the easiest disability to accommodate for when it comes to media but the pig is regularly fucked.

maybe unrelated to your post but I do remember watching pokemon mewtwo strikes back evolution on netflix. I wanted to watch it in japanese with english subs like the weeb that i am only to notice that netflix instead of translating the japanese original script so the text match what they are saying, they took the 4kids mewtwo strikes back version for the script which im sure that was the same one used for the english audio and just drop it without care. im not saying im fluent in japanese but some parts became very obvious when team rocket said nothing and the word Alakazam popped in

I only see them on the news and some timeblocks for kid's shows, of course also Mr. Tumble who uses maketon which is supplementary rather than a main means of communication.
