I think the bigger issue is that in a lot of YA western products there's rarely any actual character growth.
It's like creators (or more accurately, corporations) are afraid to write characters with actual flaws who actually suffer when they fuck up, or write a world where actual bad, unavoidable things happen.
It's just so boring when half of what they put out just feels like it comes from the same 4 places and types of people.
