The black emotion is never named. Despair, depression etc. is just the fan label. It's not totally clear what it represented, but in a season 2 episode, Maroshi grows a black tree, and the event that seemed to trigger the black gleam was him lamenting his inability to grow Treasure Trees to save his own moon.
I saw it as more "hopeless" than despair, depression or hate. Each time they're grown, it seemed to be from a feeling of defeat- Kiyoshi and Kiazuki probably felt like failures on their moons, explaining their forests of black trees, and Maroshi felt like he'd never grow a proper Treasure Tree. And Hanazuki probably worried that she and Kiazuki would never be friends, leading to her black tree.
Though that doesn't quite explain why black treasures from those trees are seemingly able to make vague predictions of the future, at least according to Kiyoshi.
Short of any of the writers coming forward with scripts though, we'll never know for sure if it ever represented a specific emotion.
