For decades, the only subjects primary and secondary schools have really cared about in the United States are Math and Science since those are the easiest to assess with standardized tests. English and Reading are distant seconds but the focus there is really more on what you need to be able to do to function in society rather than achieving mastery of those subjects.

So, yeah, if you need a teacher for History or Civics, you might as well hire that new football coach you've been wanting.

Not quite. Most gym/PE teachers need to be qualified in something else though, so they pick up a minor in another subject to teach. Some do history (my father was a history teacher who did coaching as a side), while a lot of others naturally do science or math, since that's usually closer to what they normally do anyway.

History is kind of fucked in the US, how most schools teach it. We're beholden to testing corporations, and they make money by rearranging the same 100 questions every three years, and avoiding anything that's not multiple choice. And since teachers are forced by the court of public opinion to dance to idiot-parents' merry tune or get sacked, they have to teach to the test and only the test.

Basically, big business and W Bush fucked American education more than it already was.

Being a Euro is hardly that much better when it comes to education. Depending on the public school and the country you're in, you might get next to no bullying, but the teachers still don't care and neither do the students.
If you asked me what important events happened in the 16th century, I'd be hard pressed to remember a single thing.

Can't speak for all states, but we had a minimum six semesters of history/social studies in secondary:
World History (Fall - early civilizations, classical era, through medieval era Asia and Europe, Spring - Renaissance, colonial era, industrial revolution, WWI, WWII, post-war era and touching on modern stuff
US History (Fall - prehistory, colonial era, Revolution, early US history and expansion, Civil War, Spring - Reconstruction, WWI, Depression, Prohibition, WWII, Cold War, Vietnam and Civil Rights movement, late Cold War, contemporary history
Global Issues (1 semester)
US Government (1 semester)
