The third-party archiving services as we know them today didn't really come into being until the early 2010's. Prior to them, there were Yea Forums archives, but they were only utilized for a very specific and limited capacity. Back in the day, if a board thought that a particular thread was "legendary" enough, not just your run-of-the-mill mundane shitpost, it warranted being archived for future generations to look upon in wonder and awe. But in order to get a thread archived, it had to be voted on. If the votes passed, thread was archived. Otherwise not, and you'd jist have to make do with screencaps. Hell, I still remember this method being utilized even as late as 2011, I think.
Contrast this to today where all of it is automated and in real time, and now even built into the site itself. Truly, the best days are long behind us now.

I lament the loss of images as well with some "oc" permanently being possibly lost forever but I've extensively perused the archives enough to know that there would be a ton of... unsavory...illegal content saved.
