So, I didn't work there as a guard. I was there as a mental health counselor. I had just got out of college, and the pay for it was great compared to some offerings in the bumfuck nowhere I lived in at the time. I got there right as another counselor was retiring. Long story short, none of the other counselors wanted her caseload, so I jumped at it, not realizing who her clients were. It was protective custody. Pretty much, it worked by racial demographics as follows:

Blacks: snitches
Hispanics: prior law enforcement
Whites: pedophiles
Natives: mixed bag

Where we were, there weren't Asians to speak of, so I couldn't tell you what their typical crime might be. I don't think I can describe for you how infuriating it was listening to a child rapist complain about the quality of their refried beans. Also did solitary confinement visitations. All of the screaming and death threats you see on TV? It's all for show. Those places are usually quiet as the grave, minus the sound of notes being passed on little fishing lines made of the tearable bedsheets.

Since we're talking about Chris, lemme give you an idea of what his life will look like upon his confirmed incarceration. He will NOT enter general population. Ever. Considering his crimes, and considering his mental and physical state, he will only ever be in protective custody. Before that, however, he will be in solitary confinement for about two to three months. This is so he can be monitored for suicide attempts. He will wear a flimsy paper smock, his bedsheets will be see-through thin, his pillow case will be made of a similar material, and he will have his food baked into a bread loaf. They literally just take the day's meal, grind it up, throw it in some dough, and bake it. That way they have no access to utensils. He will have a light shined on him every hour, or half-hour depending on his determined mental state. I can continue if you want, but I'm hitting 2000 words.

Not immediately. While I was there, there was a BIG push for the prison to enforce compliance with PREA (Prison Rape Elimination Act). Tons of fucking paperwork.

No, the state investigators had it completely closed off the day of. Neat for me, I got to get some paperwork done when I really needed the time, so that was a win in my book. DID see the photographs, though, and I did always notice there was a chip in the stone missing in that cell that wasn't gone prior to that.

Well some of this is speculation, but there's good reason to think it.
It boils down to this, Chris got transferred from Jail and we know HIPAA is protecting him currently. He's not in the jail system at current, and he's not home either.
His last letters were pretty deranged and he seemed to be undergoing some kind of psychosis (more than usual).
As of his transfer all letters and phone calls have stopped, and he's usually pretty active in communicating. He sent over 40 letters a month while in jail and now he's gone silent.

There's a lot of anecdotal evidence that he's been transferred to the Western State Hospital for treatment until he's fit to stand trial.

Working theory now is that after his first bail bond hearing he was put into mental health evaluation.
After that he was deemed incompetent to help in his own defense and was put on a waiting list for a spot in a mental health facility.

It worked. He managed to punch out the glass, climb down, and leg it to the wall at night. The problem was that he fucked up his throw, and accidentally used BOTH sets of water bottles and bedsheets on the first set of wire. If he crossed over between the fences, it's a 'no-man's land'. Strictly shoot to kill, and there's motion sensors that trip if anything bigger than a mouse slips through. He got pissed off, climbed back up into his cell, and just waited.

I've got a u-shaped pillow that serves almost the same function, except you're surrounded and get a pillow. Maybe I've got knobbly knees but I definitely think it's comfier to have them separated by the pillow and hugging it isn't so bad either, it's definitely designed to be spooned. But I suppose I'm really not in the same situation as the people buying those waifu pillows because I bought mine to make sure I don't roll over on my back, since I often get sleep paralysis if I do. ANYTHING is comfier than sleep paralysis.
