>TQ As in artistically? Bone, Usagi Yojimbo, and Cerebus the Aarvark was essencially the vibe I was going for. If you instead mean what it's based on, I love folklore
Inspiration for the comics? Holy smokes, so many it feels like going off on a tangent. Especially because Nine comics works different angles to satisfy our tastes; for Coocoo Luuluu - definitely Robert Crumb.
I first came up with the idea for Coocoo Luuluu while working at the loonie bin, stopping a head to toe slashed woman from hanging herself.
Slow lineartin' WIP of number 2 because I'm interrupted constantly by shit I don't wanna do but have to. I work slow, but lineart goes the fastest for me usually so yeah.
You sure are mad. Maybe you should have sex with your girlfriend so you won't be so mad? That is to say, I dig the guy on the right. He looks like a cross between Tetsuo and Cloud with a bit of hentai rapist man who fucks that one guy's wife or something.
This image is cool. Change the girl to a loli and THEN I will read your comic

>hyw/ - How's Your Webcomic? Thread #813 >Thread Question: What is your biggest source of inspiration? For tales of Bardic fury, history, the connection between culture and politics, world mythology, shonen manga and Frank Miller. The Banshee Vale Horror arc is inspired by Daredevil: Born Again and Chimera Ants arc. >Bonus Question: What's one little known fact about your comic? There was a 5 year hiatus between chapter 5 and chapter 6. Originally I was going to set this comic in a made up fantasy land until my teacher told me to set it in the real world instead so it wouldn't be like game of thrones. In research, Wales and Ireland had the deepest bard culture. Ireland was more remote and resisted Romanization for the longest so I set the story there so bards and druids could be the main focus. I don't have anything against Romans but a lot of stories are about them already and I wanted to try something different with oi. Now my main goal is to finish this arc as satisfyingly and succinctly as possible.
>Thread Question: What is your biggest source of inspiration? Dutch and Frisian culture, daily life in the Netherlands, psychedelic rock Go Nagai, Genndy Tartakovsky, the 60s show Bewitched and the 40s movie I Married a Witch
>Bonus Question: What's one little known fact about your comic? The naming customs for Justin's family has always had a patronymic to it. Patronymics aren't official in the Netherlands since Napoleon forced everyone to have an official permanent family name, but it's still a thing in Friesland for people to have a patronymic between their first and last name.
My update was a day late. Had to spend some time finalizing the setting for the storyline but found that the African Baobab looks cool combined with Andes-style peaks.
This is the 4th page of the current anthology story, I switch off between this and Cosmic Dash, week to week.
>Thread Question: What is your biggest source of inspiration?
Comics specifically? Probably Stan Sakai's Usagi Yojimbo. For my series? Probably Farscape, Futurama, and Star Wars.
>Bonus Question: What's one little known fact about your comic?
One: I was in discussion with the editor of Nickelodeon Magazine's comic section to include a two-page Cosmic Dash comic prior to the magazine folding. This was after having written a couple of SpongeBob comics and working on a couple of comics with KC Green for the magazine.
Two: Cosmic Dash was originally going to be set on an ocean planet with islands. I ended up going the space route instead.
The next five pages of Tom N Artie have been lettered so I'm setting updates for this month. There's still three more pages left to go then I wanna move onto some Reader Appreciation material.
>What is your biggest source of inspiration? Sam and Max, Atomic Robo, SCUD The Disposable Assassin and Skullkickers
>What's one little known fact about your comic? Steve Purcell owns a copy of Tom N Artie, my friend got an issue to him at a con a while ago. He was happy to see there were other comics inspired by Sam and Max.
Bonus fact: One of the early Tom and Artie concepts was drawn by a guy who went on to be a big furry nsfw artist
I love the action and character designs very much. I wish the shading was a little more subtle, though. I feel like the shading is washing out the art.
I don't have a lot of context for this page, but it seems to be hitting the right emotional beats. Good work.
My hand hurts just thinking of drawing all those lines. How long did that image take?
That kid just got fucked up.
Love the lineart here, even at the sketching stage. Nice, fluid style as well. Some of the best art I have seen in these threads.
Evan Bailey
Always enjoy Tom n' Artie. I also like Artie's "look" for this one. The non-proportional tie is funny to me.
Also, who was the artist?
David Murphy
Daftpatriot
Back when early concepts had Artie with fingerless gloves and Tom with a five o'clock shadow.
>What is your biggest source of inspiration? Yea Forums autismo directors films NWR Zahler Tarantino Scorsese Lynch Kubrick >What's one little known fact about your comic Im writing as I go no drafts no plan,
In OP's defense, it is a current reference, and the similarity to the proper OP image is funny. Objectively it is a terrible image though. Appreciate the numbering and op pasta coming back, even if it needs work
>it's an animation reference inna webcomic thread >the lazy fuck didn't even draw it i don't care what the commentary was it doesn't make up for that op needs to take a big step back
yeah this is what i'm talking about you're not cut out for this
Jackson Bell
Damn that OP pic is horrible >Thread Question: What is your biggest source of inspiration? Shin'Ichi Hoshi's short stories, Philippe Druillet and Deathburger's art. A lot of cinema composition elements. >Bonus Question: What's one little known fact about your comic? Anachronism in my comic: the story is set in Japan, yet one of my characters isn't of japanese origin BUT is a social servant, thing you'd probably never see in real life.
>Thread Question: What is your biggest source of inspiration? I have many but it's mostly the x-files >Bonus Question: What's one little known fact about your comic? Robin & agent Fitz are inspired by Goku & Bulma from DB. That's why Robin's hair is spiky like Goku's hair and she's a bit overpowered (with some caps), while Fitz brings the brains & resourcefulness being a fed, and of course he's very attractive. >the 60s show Bewitched and the 40s movie I Married a Witch TASTE! Now I have to see them genderbend, I sketched reversed roles of my mains a couple months ago. I'll make an updated one at some point
I think a better little known fact is the fact Vivian was initially supposed to be a witch named Rachel, Justin a teenager named Sully and the comic was gonna take place in the US.
>Thread Question: What is your biggest source of inspiration? 80's TV shows used to pedal toys to dumb man children. Venture Bros. Megas XLR The EPA superfund sites i grew up around.
>Bonus Question: What's one little known fact about your comic? I autistically think about how the robot transformations work so that I could design functional toys. Almost all of them could be realistically made, however you'd never know it because I can't translate it accurately with my shitty art.
>>the 60s show Bewitched and the 40s movie I Married a Witch >TASTE! Yeah, they were really enjoyable and fun stuff to watch. I found them as a teenager on Youtube and really just enjoyed their plots a lot and loved the character interactions too. Bewitched especially had an influence on my comic.
>Thread Question: What is your biggest source of inspiration? Its her and other things, although I think I deviated from the initial inspiration over the years.
>see them genderbend To be honest their first iterations were such a mix that its hard to say which one is meant to be Asha and which one Fiadh. The role of young special kid who gets captured (Fiadh) was covered by this sassy young girl named Asherat. The bounty hunter was Kay and basically had Fiadh's personality.
Other characters like Maeres or Nitani also had their own counterparts then. Nitani was a guy cyborg who wielded knives, Maeres was far less powerful and FAR more of an asshole.
The plot also was somewhat different. The ice age world remained but there was an alien element which in the new script is far more subdued.
That did occur to me when I was drawing it. I hoped nobody would notice.
Kevin Rogers
Thread Question: What is your biggest source of inspiration? Kiwibybeats and ashwright are my main insperations but My comic probably has over like 50 inspirations I won't go into for the sake of brevity.
Bonus Question: What's one little known fact about your comic? One of the Students, Goggy Magnus, is a reference to the Roman general and States-man Gnaeus Pompeius Magnus.
>In retrospect, how did I not notice this. Thats the exact kind of vibe your comic has. I think it's quite visible in the characteristics. Vivian is basically a more naive Samantha, Justin is a more folksy Darrin and Wietse is a genderbent, less-haughty Endora.
Talking about genderbents - here's a drawing of Justin and Vivian's initial designs. Vivian was supposed to be male. Gonna work on writing my comic as soon as I finish up these college reports.
Comic-making inertia is high, so I’m hoping to do small-time commissions. /hyw/friends get a steep discount.
>What is your biggest source of inspiration? There are many good stories and aesthetics that I’d like to emulate, but I’m driven by tropes that I dislike. I wanna use them to make something better than what’s already available.
Serious answer: There’s only so much fanservice I can handle before my brain shorts out. Cheesecake is okay; hard stuff, not so much. One day we’ll all be able to pass our money around like the Patreon grifter circles all do. I believe in us!
Is the only way to get your comic noticed now is to have the main character be a cute or sexy waifu?
Evan Evans
please shut the fuck up
John Thompson
That's the easy way out.
Aaron Carter
Unless you’re Renata
Alexander Ramirez
Does anyone know the name of this one webcomic about this girl (people constantly mistake her for a guy) with super strength training to become a knight that has cute goblins?
Please stop being lazy and put backgrounds in your comics. Yes, I'm talking to YOU
Dylan Gomez
nooo think of baby temujin
Brody Perez
...
Tyler Cook
Joke's on you, I'm already doing it.
Blake Long
>no, it shouldn't!

Angel Martin
TQ: a bunch of slice of life manga and 4koma shit. BQ: it’s got cunny. No sexualization.
Evan Foster
>I love old media in general but Samantha was what started my obsession with witches haha I liked Samantha and Darrin's relationship in the series, but I especially loved Endora. She was really one of the most entertaining characters in the show. Her interactions with Darrin were also gold. Their interactions inspired me to have Wietse give Vivian demeaning nicknames like "Walking Weed", "Bumbling Bouquet" or "Toots Tumbleweed".
Now that I'm done with college shit for a long while, I can go on work more intensively on my comic stuff.
new Genru page. this scene will be more dialogue than action.
>Thread Question: What is your biggest source of inspiration? nothing in particular. comics, manga, anime, cartoons, movies, my fucked up life. >Bonus Question: What's one little known fact about your comic? I have changed Rinrens name like 3 times
calarts looks better than whatever the fuck you're going for
John Myers
>I wish the shading was a little more subtle, though. I feel like the shading is washing out the art.
Hey thanks for the input, I admidely have been going back and forth with these pages because I know dark scenes which look find on my screen can look too dark on other screens. By "more suble" do you just mean making th shadows less dark, or do you rather mean you feel too much of the character is shaded?
>Really liking how this one's turning out. As you should, SfH pencils are fantastic
>my teacher told me to set it in the real world instead so it wouldn't be like game of thrones
While I think you did the right choice by setting it in "real" Ireland, I agree with the otheer poster that your teacher's reasoning it absurd
it was more the idea that there were many fantasy stories like Wheel of Time, LoTR, Discworld that have knockoff fantasy versions of the real world, so I might as well just use the real world. In any case I listened to my teacher and Oi being set in the real world is her legacy. Age of Empires II was my favorite game, and this has given me the excuse to research world mythology and history more deeply. when I need inspiration for the comic I look at history and folk stories.
Hello again /hyw/, thought id drop by to update i'm working on a story now. This art's a little rushed but i'm working on other characters and creature designs now, i'm pretty happy with the goblins aside from some gradual minor adjustments.
I wanna ask, how would you make an exploration adventure story interesting? I already have a solid idea on what I wanna do, so feel free to throw any ideas at the wall here, even if you dont think it'd fit. if not, i am always lurking here regardless
Make the world and history rich, and extremely detailed, then slowly reveal it as the characters explore, making sure rn pay close attention to detail in the setting and architecture. The world itself is vital in an exploration adventure
Ayden Rivera
Thanks, that's a great tip. I had already thought that the world should be a 'character' in of itself, if that makes any sense. The only thing that comes to mind quickly for me is the STALKER games, in how the zone itself is a living entity. I'm drawing a lot of inspiration from it actually. The world isn't gonna be some shithole but it's going to be strange and unusual, at times alien, using some fantasy tropes here, ancient history there, and other times can be truly alien.
Cooper Myers
Stalker and metro are bo great examples lf games where the world takes a starring role. As does dark souls and shadow of the colossus. If you need a tv show, Avatar spent the entire first season just exploring the lore of the world
Connor Butler
This is a masterpiece, I apologize for not trusting you.
>I wanna ask, how would you make an exploration adventure story interesting? Make sure it doesn't feel like a history lesson. Make the reader curious instead of stuffing information down their throat. Remember, no one wants a history lesson on a fake world(unless you are already a famous writer). Add in a mystery and then the exploration must slowly solve the mystery
And make sure you put in a lot of effort into the background drawing.
i just started working on it last week you retard, i'm gonna take my time with it
Xavier Bennett
user i have more "real stories" than you can shake your underdeveloped genitalia at. i defecate deep lore.
Isaiah Russell
This is mine its just not an exploration series. My exploration series was canceled due to personal struggles with the primary artist on the project. But I hope to someday revisit it since it was a project I loved
But even Renata follows the same principles. The lore is taken into account with every chapter, and the locations are never used as throw aways. Everything that’s has happened has it’s purpose to the greater narrative.
Honestly it's racist that you think I'm being racist. You're the ones effectively using nigger as a term for an entire race of people.
Ian Thompson
Today I learned that briefly drawing porn of my characters can get me out of unproductive funks. There was a short moment where I thought "Is this it? I only get satisfaction from drawing if it is porn now?" but then I worked on my non-sexual comic again and the same general feeling of joy while drawing was back. Huh.
