Our government is in tight collusion with automobile manufacturers and petroleum companies. Communities are currently unfriendly to bicycles and walking and there's even some actual rage against cyclists, probably even in some replies to this post.
The world where cyclists are an inconvenience to motorists and pedestrians are pushed to the side of the main thoroughfare is incredibly unnatural and makes us miserable- interacting with each other out of our homes is meant to be kind of slow and pleasant, short distances should be accomplished by walking and bicycles, longer distances should be accomplished by light rail and potentially bus, cross-country and transnational should be accomplished by high speed rail and flight.
This would have been a less expensive, easier to build world and we would have avoided all of the current problems we currently face- social alienation, obesity, climate issues and pollution, the shittiness of suburbia, our current economic structures. All of these owe at least a large part of their origins to our car culture. Also, bailouts to car culture, petroleum wars in the middle east, and public funding of car-centric infrastructure has funneled billions (trillions honestly) of your hard-earned tax dollars (not to mention human lives) directly into the pockets of the petrol-GM-industrial setup.
I don't think we shouldn't have cars at all. Obviously people are gonna need to move a lot of weight across town or haul something in a pickup, but automobiles are currently used for far more tasks than they are optimized to.

And notice how the main financial beneficiaries of all this political extraction of money, lives, and happiness from the public commons manage to stay out of the news.
How many times did you see a human face in relation to the VW pollution scandal?
How is the debate over drunk driving about how much people should be allowed to drink before they drive? The car is a tool obviously and it should fall on the user's responsibility, but why is the use of the tool such a strongly held assumption? Cars kill way more people than guns in america and we're not having a debate on car privilege restrictions. They seem to be immune to mass criticism, similar to the Jewish conspiracy theories.
It just really fucks me up to think about. I don't have a fully formulated theory or anything but I'm pretty sure some spooky evil shit is going on and I think we won't fully understand how much our sick ties to oil pavement and car culture have damaged and held us back. The way the Tesla is being touted as a sort of solution to the surface level problems most people have become aware of is also fucking creepy, an electric car is not a solution it's a bandaid.
