Nothing. Im innocent.

of course you are.
what were you accused of?

I was accused of violating OFAC sanctions.

Nothing, he's just going on a prison tour.

so you tried commit tax fraud by hiding assets overseas but got caught?
sucks to be you. ameriisrael doesnt like people that fuck with money that should be going to shlomo.

Jesus H fucking christ my writing is coming out shitty tonight. I'm not even sure if I should continue on this draft or scrap it and try and entirely different scene for this.

why does this remind me of that magazine for people being chased by skeletons?

What's some good scifi that covers the philosophy of technology? I'm less after ethical, social, or political consequences of tech (even though I'm ok with the books covering it a little). I'm more after discussions about what technology is, its nature, philosophical thoughts on how certain kinds of tech grow and adapt, the subjective perspectives of more philosophically-inclined fictional engineer's on the process of tech making.

Just finished Night Angel Trilogy. Starting Gentlemen Bastards now. So far I'm on a good streak with enjoyable books.

giger.
technology is a perversion of nature. an abomination that should not be.

night angel trilogy is one of the worst books written and you're probably less intelligent for reading them

I've got to agree withNight Angel was pure cirngetopia. Granted I didn't read it all because I was about ready to stab someone if I had to read much more of the author telling me about a character who is an all knowing killing machine, master assassin, god of war who could assassinate a fly on a wall on a different planet while sitting in his room and simply twitching his finger.

Gentleman Bastard isn't that great either and falls off quickly but it's still Shakespeare compared to the Night Angel books.

It is the 28th, when does this discussion part begin? First time joining a read-along on here.

First novel was by far the best

>The only litrpg Ive read was Way of the Shaman
>Its pretty awesome, except the book about the castle in the forrest, it takes what was supposed to be some sidequet and draws it out way linger than it needs to be, but it sets things up
>Book 1 and 5/6 is really where it hits the right spot

Despite the SJW shit, the Welcome to Nightvale book was a really fun read

the show actually started out really great. its later on when the fanbase was mostly tumblr that it really took a nosedive.

My sister listens to the radio show or whatever and it was too cheesy for me.

speaking of SJW shit, is priory of the orange tree any good? trying to decide between that and forgetting moon for an audiobook for my flight tomorrow. both are recently released on audible but have been out for a while.

Wrong place to ask, nobody reads that shit here. Ask in one of the sjw hangouts. I've seen people on fantasy discords say that it's good but very lengthy.

>Night Angel Trilogy
Still the shittiest book series ive ever tried. I find it unfathomable that anyone would ever recommend that infantile cringefest to anyone in any context, yet it always gets brought up through recommendations of various idiots who couldnt recognize high quality wriring if their life depended on it and only read to self-insert and/or as a form of escapism.

I used to love the podcasts but I stopped listening to them.

what advice would you give to an aspiring fantasy author?

Next thread is discussion thread! Get your nominations and ridiculous theories ready!

>Starting Gentlemen Bastards now
Remember to only read the first book.

Quit while you're ahead and do something else.

>books where boys become men
Any of Heinlein's earlier works and half of his later.

>and only read to self-insert and/or as a form of escapism.
I didn't read it but isn't it full of cuckery and love interests being killed off?

No idea, i only managed 70 pages of the first book before wanting to kill myself...

anyone else picking this up tomorrow?

>Where did it all go wrong?
Ironically with the rise of the new wave. Blame PKD, Vonnegut, Ellison, Ballard.

I mean..you're clearly baiting the Maas fag.

i got memed into downloading that

Also, not using Calibre, what are you a pleb?

i use lector, the reader is more comfy than calibre
even if i use calibre i dont know how to do long screenshots, i opened it from browser just for screenshot purposes

You can read Sasha(Trial of Blood and Steel)if the thought of a female warrior protagonist doesn't repulse you. Great books actually, the author has a gift for exploring the politics of the worlds he creates. Same guy who wrote Renegade. The protagonist doesn't matter actually, the story is all about the world around her.

i really enjoyed the spiral wars, i'll try this
thanks

>I will never read Chronicles of Amber for the first time again

Even in the purblindness of the clash, the soldier senses which units of the enemy are weakest. He calls these trogalion, “candy.” Who fights hardest on the field? One trying to get through to candy. The foe’s Thracians and Getai were brilliant horsemen but worthless on foot. Many had been made infantry by the starvation of their mounts. They felt shame to fight this way, and this made them candy.

Got another book to finish first. Then I’ll pick it up.

Entertaining
The Time Machine - the Invisible Man is so much better
The Great Book of Amber
The Lathe of Heaven - not as good as PKD
The Stars My Destination - very beige prose
The Traitor Baru Comorant - second book switches genre to adventure
Broken Earth - third book is average
Daevabad - 99% chance the 3rd book will be shit, otherwise great
Gentleman Bastards - plot quality plunges a bit
Takeshi Kovacs - only read the first. Fun but actiony
The Murderbot Diaries -the books past the first are a bit fillery
Tide Lords - last book ending will make you nani the fuck
Villains - prose could be better
Licanius - sanderson clone
Childhood's End - characters were hard to love

Kinda not great
First Law - unsatisfying ending to series

Fic for children
Old Kingdom
Reckoners
Skyward
Hitchhiker's Guide

All Sanderson is the same if you like one you like all
Mistborn
The Stormlight Archive - the last book isn't great the others are interesting lorewise the prose doesn't hold up
Elantris
Warbreaker
The Emperor's Soul

I loved this when I was an edgy teenage girl and then never again
Night Angel Trilogy - Crawling in my skin, my wounds they will not heal (with one of the magic systems literally)
Poison Study - Mr Fascist Dictator being alright was interesting, the blood magic was edgy and I'm pretty sure it doesn't hold up when you grow up.

Sequels are total shit:
Draconis Memoria
Imperial Radch
Kingkiller
The Machineries of Empire

Shitter tier:
Raven's Shadow - school shit
Brave New World - filler orgies

>Sequels are total shit:
>Draconis Memoria

He should have just wrote the whole book focused on the dragon safari. Would have been a much better book.

I liked it when it exploited the horror elements to its advantage but the lizard furfags with benefits turned the series into a slight parody of itself.

“So, Son of Cronos, you have decided to grant victory to Athens and count as nothing all our nation’s valor. Then drive me down foremost to hell, for I will never yield, to them or to you!”

Never have an opinion again you oxygen wasting dense cabbage.

I can live with the fact that you're a purple prose loving cretin who jerks off over the cringefest that Tigana so frequently that you put it in GOAT tier.

Even the choice of putting tranny/lesbian crap like Baru Cormorant and Jemisin's Hugo baits in the Entertaining tier didn't piss me off very much. I mean, what are you going to do? When you have bad taste you have bad taste. You can't help but think trash like Murderbot Diaries which started with a creative premise in the first novella and went to complete and utter shit over the course of the next 3 is actually good. That's fine.

You probably ate one too many crayons so you think Hitchhikers is for children. Whatever.

BUT WHAT IN THE FUCK MADE YOU PUT BLOOD SONG IN THE SHITTER TIER?

The only possible explanation I can think of is that your mother must have done so much heroin when she was pregnant with you that you're still high as you bled textual diarrhoea onto the screen.

You actually had the audacity to put Sanderson's trash, neckbeard Twilight and Dracnois Memoria which is Anthony Ryans WORST series and is almost as bad as the Blood Song sequels on tiers higher than Blood Song itself.

Please neck yourself RIGHT NOW.

Currently reading a childhoods end, decent book so far.

Yeh, hoping it gets uploaded somewhere very quickly.

Restart it from the base, user.

How bad would the average space ship smell?

Where do you guys find new shit to read? It's like everywhere I go I get the same five shitty books shilled to me.

Do I read Unfinished Tales before or after LotR?

But they aren’t even scalies. They get mind taped by crystals

So any of you guys read Black Leopard Red Wolf by Marlon James?

>How bad would the average space ship smell?
Depends on what kind of plants you use to scrub CO2

Books like 2001 A Space Odyssey? Some user said last night the rest of Clarkes work but I was wondering if there is anything else.

Let me guess Kingkiller Chronicles, Mistborn,A Song Of Ice and Fire,Stormlight Archive, And The Wheel of Time?

Michael scott earle being a bitch on fb (1/??)
This is a bit of a rant post, and it’s long, but I’m hoping most of you will read it and we can have a discussion about it.

I saw a post in another FB group last night, and my mind has been turning over the comments in the screen shot most of the night. I wanted to engage in a discussion here because I’ve noticed a trend in reader behavior that seems pretty negative, but I don’t quite know how to help it without talking about it somewhere.

So, take a look at that screen shot. This was posted in another FB group where someone was asking for a book recommendation. I took out the commenters’ names since they are all actually in my fan group.

Yes, those people commenting are all in my fan group. So they are my “fans”.

I wanna start the discussion out by telling you all that I write books for men.

Yeah, I’ve written Concrete Chaos and Wings of Justice, with female MCs, but the majority of my books are for men. Destroyer was written because I wanted to read a book like that, and I thought other MEN would like it, same with Rock God, Lion’s Quest, etc.. All my bestselling novels were written for MEN.

However, the “men” market for books in general is really damn small. Not a lot of men read. They also don’t really watch TV or movies. In actuality, there isn’t a lot of entertainment for men outside of videogames and sports. But I’ll get more into that later.

You left out the screenshot user.

Yeah it's so fucking long that I'm still trying to figure out how to post the whole thing so I forgot the screenshot give me second

In the meantime, gimme a link? My interest is piqued.

Michael scott earle being a bitch on fb (2/??)
If I REALLY wanted to make a ton of money, I’d write books for women. The market is way bigger, the readers there are less discerning, and the consumers are just way nicer (They are. Women almost never leave reviews under 3 stars.) If I look at the top authors across all the genres of books, women authors, writing books for women, make WAY more money than I do with a quarter of the production speed. That’s why I always thought it was funny when I saw independent authors in random “author strategy groups” talking about how well I’m doing and how lucrative the harem market must be. It’s kind of laughable, because they are ignoring the fact that I was publishing a book a week, while an author like Shannon Meyer (who write pretty much the same books, but for women) makes about the same money as me, and she does a book every two-ish months. I mean, if you were really going to go into a new market, would you go into one where the top dog does 4 books a month, or one where the top dog does half a book in the month? The answer seems obvious to me.

So, let’s take a look at the screen shot again, and keep in mind that I’m writing these books FOR MEN. In fact, take out that they are books, and replace them with like… cake or something.

I baked these dudes a cake for their party, they took a bite, and then told everyone the cake fucking sucked.

Let that sink in a moment and think about the repercussions of their posts. This isn’t like “I didn’t like this particular cake MSE made as much as his other cakes, but you might, so you should try it.” These are visceral reactions to a cake that I MADE FOR THEM with hopes that they would like it.

And these dudes are in my fan club, and they do like some of my series.

Also consider that I’m the #1 guy in this genre (or I was before I got banned). I’ve written more books than like 99.9% of the authors alive, and I like to think I kind know what I’m doing. My books might not be perfect, but they are probably super close to being exactly what they (men) want.

But they aren’t perfect.

Attached: whinycunt.jpg (511x696, 61K)

It's true though, men don't read.
That's why there aren't any here.

It's a closed facebook group my dude, just wait a couple of minutes and you can read the whole thing

Michael scott earle being a bitch on fb (3/??)
And if the book isn’t perfect, then it’s probably going to get shit on.

On particular comment is rather disturbing. It’s the “I would back Destroyer continuing. Could NOT get into Lion’s Quest due to stupid physics errors (if a spaceship roll you don’t fall over….!!!).

Let me break that down:
- He got the name of the book wrong (he’s talking about Star Justice)
- In the scene, it’s explained that the ship they are on has its gravity tech malfunctioning, so that’s why it’s acting wonky and taking a few seconds to adjust for when the ship gets rocked.
- It’s a sci-fi fantasy book, and like… uhhh… we (as in the human race currently) don’t even have gravitational technology, so it’s all made up anyway.
- That scene is like 2 sentences of a 80,000 word novel, so probably less than a tenth of a percent of the actual novel. It’s a half paragraph that he read wrong.

This guy is obviously really confused, and he’s getting upset about something that he didn’t even read/understand correctly, and it’s made up, and it’s like hardly a sprinkle of words in the entire novel, but SOMEONE is going to read that post, and avoid Lion’s Quest (the wrong novel) because he’s saying it sucked.

This is happening all the time.

Readers in this genre are getting REALLY REALLY REALLY hung up on a tiny detail of a book that breaks immersion (for them), and then they are one-staring that book and telling EVERYONE they can not to even try that book.

Michael scott earle being a bitch on fb (4/??)
That's really bad if you are looking for creators to keep creating for you.

It’s not even about me. I get shit on the least amount of all the authors in the genre. I get PMs all the time from authors writing books for men asking “damn, dude, how do you deal with all these negative reviews? They are really harsh. I kind of just… don’t want to write here anymore.”

That causes me concern, and these guys are my competition. You, the reader, should be really concerned that authors are thinking that. Like I said above, we already don’t have a lot of entertainment for men, so trashing the entertainment WE DO GET, seems like a bad idea.

This isn’t all men readers, obviously. The problem is that the really angry and outspoken haters just get a lot of clout. Those people leaving a 1-star review REALLY damage sales because other people see those reviews and avoid the book, and if enough people who liked the book don’t leave a positive review, then the book tanks, the writer doesn’t make any money, and they have to stop.

And they baked that cake for you, hoping that you’d like it.

I’ll give you a few more examples. Lots of people love LQ, but it has plenty of haters. When I ask people why they don’t like the books, I always get like the same 2-3 story parts that they don’t like. Here they are:
- readers are annoyed that Leo isn’t super happy being rich/awesome/top of the world gamer.
- readers think he is dumb for trusting Zarra because of the note the crazy person gave him.
- readers don’t like either Allurie or Cornalic because they are too outrageous.

Michael scott earle being a bitch on fb (5/??)
I can understand their opinions about these points, but their reasoning normally falls apart once I ask them a few more questions. Like “What would you do if you’ve been winning the same game for 10 years in a row and had all the money you could ever dream of?” They normally answer “Ohhh, well, I guess I’d probably be a lot like Leo.”

“What would you do if someone offered you a cure for your parent’s sickness and a bunch of money to play her game, and someone (crazy) gave you a note not to trust her? You’d seriously just walk away and let your parents not get the treatment? You wouldn’t want to play this awesome new game?” They normally answer “Oh, well, yeah. I’d totally play.”

“Allurie and Cornalic represent challenges to Leo. He’s gotta figure out how to use them in his party despite their personality flaws. Should the entire experience just be easy? Should everyone just instantly be his slave?” and they answer. “Naw that would be boring.”

Look, I’m not saying I didn’t mess up with LQ, but the parts that are “bad” in that book are like 3-4% and the other 96% is really good, but from what some people write on-line and the reviews the book received, it was like people actually puked when they ate my cake, but they would have really liked it had they just said “I don’t like this one small thing, but maybe the rest of the novel is awesome.”

I’ve actually seen that in the LitRPG Reddit group, where a certain dude that wrote a like 4 page essay on why LQ was the worst LItRPG novel ever written, and how dare I even write something like that, and I should die in a fire, etc… change his mind 2 years later and write “I really liked Lion’s Quest, and I wish MSE would write more instead of all that shitty harem novels his writing. Let me write an essay about how much Tamer sucks.”

I’m looking in the market and I’m seeing GREAT books getting just shit on by reviews. I’m reading through Dante King’s Immortal Swordslinger book. It’s super fun, well edited, etc… but you wouldn’t think that from the tons of negative reviews it’s getting. Same thing with books written by Eric Vall, Logan Jacobs, MH Ryan, etc… All of those books have been worthy of at least 4 star reviews, but I see them just getting fucking creamed in the reviews, then I see their sales numbers drop off because other readers avoid them.

Michael scott earle being a bitch on fb (6/6)

This isn’t me pointing the finger at all of you and saying “BE NICER!” I’m more like wanting to open a discussion about why we as men, kind of act super salty over minor shit. Like I totally get like this with some books, I fricken hate, hate, hate Robbin Hobb’s Assassin’s Apprentice series, but I can point to like ever single chapter where Hobb makes me (the reader) feel like shit because she puts her MC through shit (so I feel like she deserves my scathing reviews), but other novels I realize I get hung up on one little thing, and I can’t let it go, but the creator doesn’t deserve my spite.

Everyone says SOLO was a great movie, but we didn’t watch it, and I’m looking at the market for men’s books, and it looks like it’s cratering dramatically. That’s why I asked that question the other day about your reading habits. A lot of you say you are reading the same amount, but it really looks like readership in the genre is down by at least half.

Do you 1-star books when a small detail is off? Do you 5-star a book when you really like it? If you like reading books, do you try to get other men to read? If we WANT more content and entertainment for men, how do we get it?

Attached: givemefreemoney.jpg (2550x3300, 492K)

I feel like he has no humility whatsoever. I mean I like his books but yeah, I wouldn't like to meet the author.

>this isn’t me being salty
>t. man who writes a huge blog about how salty he is

That being said, his bar for “quality” is absurdly low. Vall and Jacobs write worse trash than he does. Stop asking like a spoiled ass.

Any other book series like this set in a gritty medieval feudal world with monsters and mythical creatures?

BONUS ROUND

EDIT: TL;DR version is "I'm the top guy in the genre, and have written a bunch of well received books, but I get shit on a lot. How is a new author with less experiance going to deal? It's really hard to write entertainment for men. Is there anything we as men can do to ensure we get more entertainment? Should we go easier on creators? It seems that women don't have this problem, and there is a ton of entertainment for them.

The detailed post:
see user Note: Yeah he actually edited the poat with "I'm the top guy in the genre". What a humble guy.

Pretty much.

>swallowing a tower

So this is just softcore gay porn though right?

>It's really hard to write entertainment for men
Guy comes off as a whiny bitch but he's not really wrong here. When something comes out that caters to male fulfillment you have some dumb cunts reviewing it crying about shit like "toxic masculinity" and all that other retarded buzzwords. On the flip side, you have series catering to females with some of the most depraved shit yet it gets a completely free pass.

Yeah but he is not whining about sòyboys who care about toxic masculinity, he is whining about how people didn't like part of some of his books and actually goes and gives reasons why they are wrong. I mean, there is always some cunt that reviews a book with one star, but the majority are fair. This author CAN'T take criticism. Him or his moderators actually ban people of the facebook group if any criticism is directed toward the author or his books.

Joe Abercrombie,

The Black Company.

and that's a good thing!

The red knight

Is Player of Games good? Not really feeling it that much so far (about 40 pages in).

What’s going there? I can't read squiggles.

I just finished it, used it as an intro for the Culture series.
Doesn't really like the setting ; it's really indolent and people have everything they could possibly want, and more. As a result, I don't really feel like any of these people we met has a real thing that "drives" them to live. They fuck, they party, they get themselves high, and that's all they do all day and they live up to 200 years old.

Conflict is almost completely artificial as a result, even when the guy get whisked away from this Heaven, he's never in any real danger and you can't really "feel" him, because he never really feels sad, angry, or something similar.

The ending actually gives a real sense of tension, and there's an actual effort to build something that's not "space hip, pies with literally everything they want", but that's only the last 60 or so pages. The middle is really average.

Lastly, there's not a single likable character (expect maybe that drone at the start). They're all either spoiled hippies or schemers which are ridiculed when posed next to all the all-knowing, all-powerful Culture.

TL:DR; okay-ish book, shit setting (at least for me).

>red knight
Is this any good?

Don't fall for the Cameron shill, you'll end up a cuck like all the mcs in his books.

Its ok. Some people here don't like it (ie: that out autist who calls him a cuck because he doesnt end up with the first skirt the mc chases) but I thought it was an enjoyable enough read. If you want a heavy cavalry charge into a line of monsters, its right up your alley.

>him a cuck because he doesnt end up with the first skirt the mc chases
This happens in every series Cameron has written.
There is also always a neglectful/abusive mother.
The love interest is abusive half the time too.

Being a bride of Christ isn't abusive user...

After, unless you've already read LotR once.

I like Wheel of time. But its probably more because of translator and that I start skipping Elayne parts.

>people aren't worshipping me at every turn REEEEEE-
Pathetic. Everybody has books they like and dislike. Getting bad reviews are normal, get over it. And no, the readership isn't going down because of it. Because more books are being released, the bar is getting higher, and the worst books are getting the boot. But since his contacts are people like Vall, Jacobs, Ryan, he probably thinks that everyone is doing badly. Maybe he doesn't understand the concept of median: half the books are below average, the other half is above. It is natural to have books with 1 or 2 stars. That women don't do it has nothing to do with it.

This tebehe.

Anyway
Where you guys get the new books in digital format to read?

The Library

This. It was the most edgy book I've read, and that after the ending of gentlemen bastards. I guessed the whole book in the first few pages and confirmed it later.

>I baked these dudes a cake for their party, they took a bite, and then told everyone the cake fucking sucked.
He forgets the dudes PAYED for the fucking cake.

Out of all the books I've read, I don't think I've read a "romance" as nauseating as Kvothe and Denna.

>write LitRPGs
>whine that your readers' standards are too high

>It's really hard to write entertainment for men.

Oh no it's so hard and taxing to write puerile power fantasies. I sped-read a couple of his Death Ship books back when he got banned off Amazon for buying review boosters, they were essentially a one of those "abducted by the sexy aliens" books for women except with some action scenes that felt like reading a bad Mass Effect knockoff and the protagonist was the one doing the hole-filling.

I figure he puts about as much time into writing them as authors who write paperback airport novels about Dex Cooper, Super Spy chasing the mad lib villians of the week.

Dude is (or was, rather) basically writing harlequin romance novels and then putting on a turtleneck and acting like he's a "serious author."

I think rather than the bar being raised it's more over-saturation due to a growing market. There's enough out there now that readers can afford to pick and chose "the good stuff" written by authors who take care with their stuff instead of churning it out as fast as possible to make bank.

>In actuality, there isn’t a lot of entertainment for men outside of videogames and sports.
when did this mouthbreather decide that he was 'all men'

filebonus.com/n5vz6o2lsx1v

Going to start Wheel of Time. Wish me luck lads.

good luck, see you next year.

In his "defence" most of his whining is saying exactly that: he's writing exactly the same sort of shit but selling a fraction as well because men aren't as keen to read garbage.

He literally said he writes a book in a week.
How much quality control can anyone fit in that time? Does he have an army of editors?

What are some comfy horror fantasy novels?

Attached: The Tower That Swallows.png (702x496, 13K)

Stop

Yeah, those are nice books but I've already finished them all, I've also read the night angel, the black prism, and the desdren archives. Recommend me more please

Aaaaaaand I'm finished. Well this definitely had the most female warriors I've ever read in a book before and even though I still have a difficult time imagining some of the feats these ladies performed in combat and battle... it was a good enough story overall that I didn't really care by the end. All the main characters ended up being likable (no heroes and villains in the traditional sense), the story was compelling, the action was of course fantastic being gritty and visceral and believable, and the world-building with the Amazon culture/society was especially great.

I don't know about "comfy," but Night Winds by Karl Edward Wagner is a collection of short stories that are mostly straight up horror stories set in a Sword & Sorcery setting.

What's up with fantasy writers being huge fetishists, sneaking in their fetishes in a lot of subtle and non subtle ways through their books?

I'm pretty sure dirty old Jordan is primarily responsible for developing a BDSM-fetish in me during my teenage years. I don't complain mind you

Attached: file.png (220x337, 223K)

Have you tried the Lies of Locke Lamora? Pretty cool thiefkino

Attached: file.png (326x499, 455K)

lol RJ is definitely responsible for developing my spanking fetish.

Enjoy spending half a year reading and then slowly realizing what a waste of time it was as your attachment to the world and the characters wither away.

same here

Can you guys recommend sci-fi novels that start out small but end up being massive in scope (like Forge of God, or The Matrix, to give a film example)? Something that starts off with a plot that's very contained but eventually everything is on a world/cosmic scale.

spanking, slavegirls, kidnapping, bondage, mindbreak.

the seanchan should have won, they had patrician taste

Disgusting

Attached: 1541976054861.jpg (700x875, 102K)

Anyone who would wipe the Aes Sedai of the face of the earth has my vote.
And the Seanchan do win.

If you can live with a somewhat mediocre ending, Revelation Space is some good sci fi on a big scale. It goes wide pretty fast though.

The Spiral Wars series by Joel Shepard is the last sci fi I read, its more military sci fi but not too shlocky. Starts out fairly small with intrigues and local power-plays that's connected to larger galaxy spanning events through the books.

Three Body Problem start with a radio operator and end with the death of the universe.

I’ve been gone for a while, what are the latest spicy memes on /sffg/

Are you referring to Aviendha's vision when she sees her descendants hunted down and killed by the new seanchan world order?

I thought that was only a what-if they failed.

Absolutely based. The Seanchan were patrician af.

That was a what-if only if the Aiel didn't change their ways.

Nah fuck off it's fact.

It was a while since I read it, but wasn't there stuff alluding to Tarmon Gai'don had merely been delayed in that future, and that despite the technological prowess of the Seanchan new order, they were losing the war against the resurgent Shadow?

I'm with this guy.

Kind of. If the Seanchan had been left unchecked they would have conquered all the other lands including the Aiel - which iirc what part of what Aviendha saw and telling her the Aiel can't win that battle.

In the end they would have been the only ones left to fight the Shadow and they would have lost.

Masters of Rome

Weird that Ishmael destroyed Hawking's empire because he didn't want the last battle to be against a unified world, but the Seanchan would lose anyway if they did that.

Nobody ever claimed that the forsaken were smart.

Ishmael is the only one that's supposed to be not entirely retarded.

Most lightweight reader for android?
Document Viewer doesnt read mobi files

God I wish someone is like this with something I write one day

None. Any sci fi author worth their salt would explore the million problems life extension/immortality would create for human society. It'd be the most awful of dystopias.

readera. its on the play store. completely open source and completely lightewight. does mobi, pdf, text files, epub and a few other formats.
can also hook into a calibre library server but thats experimental.

Is Jonathan Strange actually good? I got it at Goodwill but lately Ive been seeing often and to me that doesnt bode well considering I doubt it is as popular as Twilight or Harry Potter to justify repeat shelfspace

Also fuck my local Goodwill, they used to rotate the entire collection regularly and it was fucking great, now they just keep the same books no one wants for weeks

hot

>romance
It's completely one-sided. It's a platonic cuckold.
>falling in love with a prostitute
>"you'll never know her like I do'"
I wish I could kill rothfuss. His cuck fetish bleeding into his book is disgusting.

If it's on that list, it's probably shit.

it's great. I wish I could read it for the first time again.

Let's settle this once and for all.

Did Heinlein write it as a cautionary tale about totalitarianism, or was he trying to promote the benefits of a militaristic fascistic state?

Attached: file.png (205x300, 189K)

It's great. Unfortunately the author suffer from some kind of meme disease and will probably never release another book.

Its fucking awesome, thanks

Who gives a shit what he wanted to write about? What matters is how you interpret it.

Something doesn't have to be pushing an agenda when it portrays something
The movie chose to go full blown fascist satire but I genuinely believe that the book isn't advocating one way or the other
People who take the movie at face value though are absolute retards

I think the movie deserves more credit than it's given. It can both be viewed as satire and as promotion for the cause. In many ways, it really makes you think more than the book.

>Gregory Bend Forward

It's great I wish I could read it for the first time all over again. The book does proceed at a pretty slow stately pace so this one does need patience.

So does Lindon become the youngest Underlord in the world in this novel? Is he one step away?

he and yaren both become undearlords. he isnt the youngest by a long shot though. i think in novel 4 there was mention of a seven year old sage.

>Way of the Shaman is good
No it isn't it fell off. The concept was good, but the execution was shit. If the author changed a few things it would have been great.

t. pol who is just here to push his propaganda and not read a single book

>Naked Lunch
Wtf am I reading
But I like it

Remember when you deal with soulfire you can make what body you want, the Dragon just wanted a young body to make himself be underestimated.
I think they are the youngest. Their mentor/benefactor was kinda a big thing for hitting it before 30, now they did it before 20.

Did it happen near the end of the book? Do we get to spend time with them as underlords?
Man I can't wait for Lindon to go back to his family's village, when the highest rank in there is Jade. Can't wait for him to unleash his aura on all cunts that made him bow as a youth.

see for yourself

Isn't the cut out prose sublime? The author does have a fetish for gay shotacon though.

I think that part was one of my major reasons that I ultimately dropped the book. Kvothe literally went p to the guy going balls deep in the girls he loves and basically said "I'm in the friendzone" and was proud of it. I don't use this term often because of how much meaning it's lost, but Rothfuss is the epitome a beta male.

Does litRPG get better than this?

Like 2 months.

Worth the read or wait for the show?

Attached: gom.jpg (282x475, 40K)

It's a short as fuck book, why would you not read it?

I am waiting for the audiobook. Just spoiler tag it to me. It isn't going to change my enjoyment. I'm not one of those cucks that make noise because someone told me exactly what happened in a book before I read it. If anything it makes me want to read it more.

>bring magic back to england only for it to become a meme

local library doesn't have it, and local shop is selling it for 20.99, not gonna give Amazon any money tho

>Does litRPG get better than this?
Yes it does.

> it starts off strong though
Kinda does. But I dropped the series when I finished book one. I don't know if it was the translation (it wasn't) but I don't want no jail shaman working his time off in the mines. I would take it if it was done better.

just download the ebook for free

I don't know where that came from, but my conclusion came from simple sampling. I've read 6 books from that list and only one of them was any good. And I know at least a couple others that I won't read because I know for a fact that they are bad also. But I guess calling /pol/ like it's the worst thing ever for people who disagree with you is much simpler than engaging in a discussion. You know where they do that all the time? r/fantasy, you should check it out, seems right up your alley.

What an entitled piece of shit. He expects me to read his shit and tell him it's gold instead? Talk about fucking echo chambers.
If a authors does shit I, as the consumer, will call them out on it.

That is why I shill Will Wight and William D Arand. Their books have bad parts, but good ones too. And they don't seem like entitled stuck up pieces of shit begging you to give them 5 stars so they, as men, who write books, for men, can bask in their proper positions of power.

>what is probability
I said that if it's on that list, it's probably shit, because from my experience, 5/6 to 8/9 of a random sampling I did turned out to be shit. And you called /pol/ because you are a retarded. I've got no idea why anyone would call /pol/ on that other than "he doesn't like my shitty list, must be /pol/ trolling again". Fuck off.

I wish I had had the maturity to drop the book earlier. I was like 16,17 when I read it and though the magic was cool and the story behind the chandrians were awesome so I kept going. Even then I knew that part of the story with Denna was disgusting but I just endured it because she was getting the boot soon, right?

This. So far it's the only book that's any good, and that after a very weak first book. He posted the first three chapters of a drow story on facebook though, and that seemed very interesting as well. I hope he gets to release it some day.

>I learnt my lesson with other harem books that are written purely for harem.
Tell me about it. Seriously. What books did you read and what was so bad about them?

I dropped Will Wight' Cradle on the kindle preview. I honestly can't stand chink shit, even western flavoured ones. Arand's books are all copies of one another and I've read most of them, and none of them are much above average. I think the one I liked the most was Fostering Faust, just because it's as depraved as it gets without being complete porn.

Ishamael is the only one who remembers all his past incarnations, too. But he just keeps making the same dumbass choices.

If you liked Tamer try Island Jumper, harem castaway survival mystery.

/sffg/, is there any good story where the main characters spend most of the story trying to get somewhere only to have the inhabitants try to murder them when they finally get there?

thats every adventure fantasy novel ever.

I fucking love Ellison and Ballard, but you're not wrong. That cynicism really killed off the enterprising themes of earlier works.

For boys become men, it's gotta be Heinlein's juveniles.

I did. While I can certainly see the similarity, it was shit. I put up with it the whole first book, but I couldn't finish the second one.
>gotta save'em all
Dude, you can barely feed yourself! And you want to spend your time searching for more girls?? What the fuck! What will you feed them then? Besides dick, of course; sperm isn't made from nothing afterall. At least in tamer Victor had his priorities straight. Can't fuck if you're dead.

Yeah I kept waiting for them to eat what they killed and they didn't. Only thing that bothered me otherwise I enjoyed it.

maybe I should have been more specific. I don't mean something like LoTR where the characters know they're going into a shitty place because it's necessary. I mean stories where the destination itself is supposed to be the prize

The book was to emphasize the importance of a persons's duty to society. the book did not portray a militaristic society, but a liberal one during wartime, with the rules of citizenship changed to resemble something more like south korea or switzerland, but even more open as to how one renders civil service. The book is neither a cautionary tale or an advocacy, it's a coming of age tale that's been poisoned by a terrible film adaptation.

>What is purple and biege prose?
In literary criticism, purple prose is prose text that is so extravagant, ornate, or flowery as to break the flow and draw excessive attention to itself. Purple prose is characterized by the excessive use of adjectives, adverbs, and metaphors. When it is limited to certain passages, they may be termed purple patches or purple passages, standing out from the rest of the work.

Purple prose is criticized for desaturating the meaning in an author's text by overusing melodramatic and fanciful descriptions. As there is no precise rule or absolute definition of what constitutes purple prose, deciding if a text, passage, or complete work has fallen victim is a somewhat subjective decision.

All wuxia

Militarist yes, fascist no.

From what little we see of it the, human government does not actually fit with many of Umberto Eco's "Ur Fascism" qualifiers. Rather I would call it a "exclusivist liberal" society, political power is concentrated in the hands of the government (the party) but civilian society appears to be non-authoritarian and "milk and honey" (eg, Rico's parents disapprove of him doing federal service because they think it'd be a bad career choice, indicating that this is not the typical modern "hoodrat joins the military to get out of the slums" milsf setup) and anybody can gain political power by doing federal service.

>shits on cradle
>says he dropped it
>after a very weak first book

Your opinions have been disregarded.
You sound like those cucks who say that the series gets better after book 3. Kys you waste of air.

Take your sampling probably and fuck off. You have shit tastes.
Why don't you show us what books you rate a 4/5 or 5/5.

but i dunno im pretty hooked.

Man, I don't know what the fuck is going on, but the people in this thread are all so sensitive all of a sudden. No, I didn't like your shitty chinese knock off, and yes, I kinda liked that other shitty book that had a bad first half. Chill out.

Holy shit Will Wight has outdone himself so far.

I'll beat your ass, faggot.

I mean I guess this is true in that the saying is true that you can't make a truly anti-war movie since some people will always take it as a positive portrayal but you'd have to be a special kind of retarded to think that the society in Starship Troopers is anything to want to emulate

Is any magic real? Like, could be done real?

The real magic is the friends we made along the way.

What this user said

>Is any magic real? Like, could be done real?
Yes, but it requires blood sacrifices. Lots of blood sacrifices, which is why the occult elites are always involved in warmongering but also try to prop up the population of hapless Africans whose death can be channelled into sinister rituals.

they can tell you all about wizardry, dark rituals and tulpas.

Of course magic's real, we just call it something else. How else do you think you're reading what I'm saying right now?

Ah, so that's white magic.

The description of the birth of a comet in Lucifer's Hammer is some of the best science writing ever.

wicca has spells and rituals, but they're more like active prayer than actual magic.

But why would you read that neckbeard trash when Underlord is also out?

i already finished underlord yesterday.
being and arand fan is suffering because now i have grown used to his pace of releasing a book a month. the wait for other things only gets harder and harder. i did enjoy underlord. you are welcome to your opinion though, user. i just want people to enjoy the things they like.

I have to wonder, what's the reaction of his fans to this?

Corwin cycle >>>>> Merlin cycle

Any series with an unconventional protagonist? Something like the Sarantine Mosaic where the mc is an artist who doesn't know how to fight and never picks up a weapon.

The Discworld series has Rincewind, a wizard who is so bad at being a wizard that the book notes that when he dies the average occult ability of the population will increase.

cugel from dying earth is such a polite asshole to everyone its hilarious. you cant help but root for him somehow though

FUCKING CALLED IT
I KNEW ryker was uncle
FUCKING KNEW IT

Considering the novel does nothing but praise the military, I'd go with the latter.
Critical thinking isn’t one of Heinleins strong suits.

oh god the shirley and claire switcheroo extends to super sales and runner doesn't know that the shirley that attacked legion is in fact claire and not the actual shirley
the plot fucking thickens

Underlord is like a 2 hour read
It’s odd he won’t write faster when all he’s doing is having the characters grasp the grand daoand advance to whatever

Now I just gotta wait till September for Underlord, Demon accords 14, Dungeons Deposed 2 and fostering Faust 2... And whatever book Arand releases within that time...
Audiobooks is suffering.

Think I'm gonna start in on this today. Anyone here read this? Any thoughts? I've been in the mood for more "darker" Sword & Sorcery with nice Horror vibes.

Seems like if you want increase your chances of getting published you have to include minorities and fags in your work these days. I never will, but I wonder how many authors end up giving in to these demands?

Does anyone have a sffg-core chart? From the ones I’ve seen cited here I’ve read Dune, Hyperion 1 and 2, BOTNS, and some others that may or may not be on there. Reading Lord of Lignt right now. What’s canon here?

>What’s canon here?
Reading things you enjoy.

Sanderson gave in, and he is Mormon.

Also
>minorities

How is calling them minorities /pol/? That's what they're referred to where I live and that's what they are where I live. You people who see /pol/ around every corner are just as bad as the retards from there.

The outerlit fags have Bloom's western canon and whatnot. No reason /sffg/ couldn't have a canon of our own. I mean it contributes to the enjoyment to understand where concepts are coming from, and speculating what authors the writer was influenced by.

Download link?

Dolphin Island and Islands In the Sky are in the "boy becomes man" genre.

Can we talk about the Dune movie? How can a faithful adaption work without extremely stilted narration or inner monologues? I know "unfilmable" is a meme word, but Dune seriously comes close. I don't see how you could ever visually convey the subtle mindgame going on behind all the conversations Jessica or the mentats are involved in. Or the main character of the story literally awakening as a prescient god who can see thousands of future timelines at once. I've seen Villeneuve's more popular movies, they're not bad at all and he's a great director, but nothing I've seen from him (and especially Arrival) makes me very confident this can be pulled off.

Where can I find it?
Amazon doesn't seem to have it, and Arand's blog isn't saying anything.

Is it worth reading the Elric sequence if I liked the Witcher books and games?

>Bloom's western canon
Well I'll be damned, Bloom's concept of the "School of Resentment" is exactly what I hate in modern literature. Finally a name to put to that claptrap.

>Is it worth reading the Elric sequence.
Definitely
>if I liked the Witcher books
Oh, then nvm

So it's nothing like SoD and TLW?

Personally I despise Bloom's fetish with Shakespeare and in general, his taste is the absolute opposite of mine, but School of Resentment is a sound concept. I mean it is a trend, which has arisen relatively recently, a trend which has done damage to literature (though some merit as well) and as such deserves to be named.

I mean you can definitely draw parallels, but while Elric is genre-defining, Witcher is just Mediocre-tier fantasy (it is not terrible, but average is the best thing I can about it).

It's just another retarded buzzword whose only purpose is describing anything the author doesn't like.

It all sounds to me like he's another retard like Peterson, except with literary pretensions.

Why do you all hate sanderson again? I am about finished with the Way of Kings and it is light years better in quality than anything Neil Gay-man has written, but I see him in every rec here for some reason.

This settles the matter then, thanks!

I imagine the show will be just okay as well, I'm not sure it'll translate very well, but what do I know..

I literally can't tell who is who, though I am very opinionated on this matter. Your criticism is terrible.

A solid 3/5. Went in directions I was afraid it was going to before starting but the author handled it well mostly except for a cringe moments.

Theres too many things to read, lads

maybe when people didn't talk about litrpg nonsense all the time. shit is embarrassing.

At least he kills people, unlike Robin Hobb's Assassin who doesn't assassinate people. You cunts praise the Not-Assassin Apprentice.

>Why do you all hate sanderson again?
He's entry level fantasy

sff is embarassing, litrpg is just the next step. The main issue with it is that most of it is fanfiction tier writing, not that the genre is much more cringe than most wish fulfillment fantasy books

>stop liking what I don't like

people who defend hobb and that shit series baffle me. I dropped it like 3 quarters of the way through the 3rd book when I realized I was almost dont and nothing interesting had happened yet. Fuck female authors and fuck hobb

>sff is embarrassing
then why are you here?

because im not pretentious about what I read. I enjoy this shit even though I know its shit.

So, have we scared away birdboi?

>The main issue with it is that most of it is fanfiction tier writing
Does it need any other issues? The fact that other sorts of wish-fulfillment fantasy doesn't make it any less of a shitty basis for a narrative.
If it's the "next step" it's not an appealing one.

>spoiler
I'm still waiting on the Jessica ending where she becomes your momwife instead of Chani.

I think if the genre gets more popularized there will be some semi competent writers who will contribute. I dont see how its a shitter basis for a narrative than more generic fantasy settings.

>because im not pretentious about what I read
but you just called sci-fi and fantasy embarrassing. if you weren't pretentious about reading it, then you would just enjoy it without having to make a weird justification to a bunch of strangers on the internet that you "know it's shit".

is it a weird justification? Do people in this general really think theres any fantasy thats actually comparable to meme Yea Forums books? The only author I could even see people bringing up is Wolfe and I don't agree. Fantasy is about being, if not wish fufilment, at least enjoyable to read.

By 'it' do you mean 'wish-fulfillment' or 'LitRPG'?
In the former case, because it makes the story revolve around how cool the protagonist is rather than actually having a fucking narrative. And in any case the appeal of reading a book sucking off an imaginary hero is entirely lost on me.
In the latter case, involving game mechanics and stats is just a baffling mis-use of an abstraction where it has no place.

FUCK LitRPGs,FUCK SANDERSON AND FUCK JANNIES

I've read some Elric books and I fucking hate it. I own the first 3 Jerry Cornelius books and Blood by Moorcock, should I bother giving them a chance if I think Elric is the worst fantasy I've ever read? I'll just sell them otherwise.
