Christopher Hitchens and Sam Harris both caught shit during their lifetimes for being Islamophobic. Hitchens supported the Iraq war until his death, long after he stopped even remotely approving of the Bush Administration based on a fear of Middle Eastern culture.

I’ve noticed this too and I’m from India. The difference between ancient Indo-Greek atheism and the modern day variety is that the latter actually has very specific ideas about the cosmos that only makes sense in a post-Protestant world. These new atheists claim that their beliefs, or lack of beliefs, are a blank slate, but in fact they’re a rejection of one particular religion, which is Protestant Christianity. When the Protestant religion was formulated it was in the context of anti-Catholicism, and in the same way New Atheists define themselves by a negation of Protestant ideas.

OP this is a little inside baseball for you but many people in the broader atheist community constantly talk about the great split in atheism for this reason. It is quite obnoxious that they shit on Christianity but that’s because they’re speaking from a place of anger and most likely had some bad interactions with Christians in their personal life. This is the mark of a young atheist. The intellectuals were ravaged years ago by sex accusations and feminism has wrecked the community as well ( like it has with many others ). This has led to an even deeper shift of “woke” atheists vs. the skeptics. This is easily seen on YouTube as most so-called “anti-sjws” were formerly active atheists commenting on the issues in that community. Most of them say “atheism is dead” because atheists don’t talk about atheism they talk about social issues and argue amongst themselves. The most prominent atheist critic that’s consistent about his views is Sam Harris who’s rich for these views so I’d say there’s absolutely atheists that criticize all of the religions of Abraham. An atheist attacking Christians in this current climate is just low hanging fruit, they aren’t bright for doing so as every piece of entertainment they consume makes the suggestion that theists are dumb. This is a huge inconsistency in the progressive community because pointing out the problems of Islam will get you blackballed. I’m an atheist but for what it’s worth I see way more value and social cohesion in the worldview of Christians than anything coming out of the atheist or “cosmopolitan” secular world. That’s something Sam Harris will never understand, we aren’t all fucking rich New Yorkers.

Many antitheists come out of majority-Christian societies (if for no other reason that anti-theists outside the West are more likely to get lynched or beheaded) so it’s natural that they’d focus more on Christianity than, say, Zoroastrianism.

Because these atheists arose specifically from a post-protestant context. Because Protestants almost entirely wiped out all theology, the *nglo has developed a resistance to logos. This is best exemplified when you see alleged big-brain atheists completely ignoring proofs for God's existence, and rather shift the debate to "but if God exists, then why did Christians kill people in the Crusades???"

Christianity believe it or not is still the biggest force evangelizing worldwide from Latin America to Asia to Africa. The 'atheist community' has gone from rational arguments against religion (with specific points made against all religions) to merely an anti-christian movement for progressive liberals (see: atheism plus). Could you imagine how uninterested the congregation would be if the local baptist minister started using his pulpit time to attack Islam or Judaism?
