Martha Nussbaum, 20th century philosopher/academic/Harvard elite

she is one of the leading philosophers of ethics. she really likes Aristotle.

Ah. Philosophy again.
I’ve seen no hype. What make her ethics of interest?

>I’ve seen no hype
she was/is a rock star. this is the big one

lel, my professor was also a student of hers and is B R I T I S H. I like her writing style, but she's completely wrong about the Symposium. It almost astounds me how wrong she is.

I bet she has a nice pussy goddamn I would like to fuck her

it's made of solid steel user i wouldn't go there. she used to break chain links with it at Harvard back in the 1980s. they almost made an animated TV series about her

She’s 11 years older than that now (71)

I did actually see her before in Examined Life

She was stunning in her 20’s

>She was stunning in her 20’s

Pseud.

Post more pics of her.

She looks like a dude with a wig on

she's a milquetoast shit-tier """"philosopher""""

I saw her give a talk once on anger and the oresteia and found it really ponderous and boring, which was strange because I was a classics major who was obsessed with that shit. The next day my professor asked me what I thought of the talk and I literally had nothing to say. Either the thing went way over my head or she was just doing a brainlet reading of Aeschylus on stage. After reading some of her work I think she mostly just says obvious stuff but couches it in archaic terminology and relies on the fact that most people never actually read the Greeks, so it seems like what she is saying is somehow novel or interesting.

nuss baum is jewish for noose tree

>women
>philosophy
Not even once.
>The New York Times praised Cultivating Humanity as "a passionate, closely argued defense of multiculturalism" and hailed it as "a formidable, perhaps definitive defense of diversity on American campuses".
And that's what you get.

>Nussbaum's interest in Judaism has continued and deepened: on August 16, 2008, she became a bat mitzvah in a service at Temple K. A. M. Isaiah Israel in Chicago's Hyde Park, chanting from the Parashah Va-etchanan and the Haftarah Nahamu, and delivering a D'var Torah about the connection between genuine, non-narcissistic consolation and the pursuit of global justice.[7]

>During her studies at Harvard, Nussbaum encountered a tremendous amount of discrimination, including sexual harassment, and problems getting childcare for her daughter.[8] When she became the first woman to hold the Junior Fellowship at Harvard, Nussbaum received a congratulatory note from a "prestigious classicist" who suggested that since "female fellowess" was an awkward name, she should be called hetaira, for in Greece these educated courtesans were the only women who participated in philosophical symposia.

>Nussbaum's work on capabilities has often focused on the unequal freedoms and opportunities of women, and she has developed a distinctive type of feminism, drawing inspiration from the liberal tradition, but emphasizing that liberalism, at its best, entails radical rethinking of gender relations and relations within the family.
Academia is pure cancer.

>She testified in the Colorado bench trial for Romer v. Evans, arguing against the claim that the history of philosophy provides the state with a "compelling interest" in favor of a law denying gays and lesbians the right to seek passage of local non-discrimination laws. A portion of this testimony, dealing with the potential meanings of the term tolmêma in Plato's work, was the subject of controversy, and was called misleading and even perjurious by critics.[13][14] She responded to these charges in a lengthy article called "Platonic Love and Colorado Law".[15] Nussbaum used multiple references from Plato's Symposium and his interactions with Socrates as evidence for her argument.

Because she BTFO of Judith Butler

>she’s not Jewish

I'm pretty sure she actually converted.

I don't like the woman, but she is clever, and there's no denying that she publishes a lot.

She's also charismatic and well connected.

It’s all irrelevant

butler is unironically based

>drives Jews crazy
You should shill her on /pol/ as somone who triggers le zionists epic style

lol no

faculty.georgetown.edu/irvinem/theory/Nussbaum-Butler-Critique-NR-2-99.pdf

Her too
>Butler has supported lesbian and gay rights movements and has spoken out on many contemporary political issues.[7] In particular, she is a vocal critic of Zionism, Israeli politics,[8] and its effect on the Israeli–Palestinian conflict, emphasizing that Israel does not and should not be taken to represent all Jews or Jewish opinion
We're gonna turn into a pro-palestine, pro-socialist and pro-lgbt stronghold simply by using the zionist angle.

+turn /pol/

Judith pretty much wrecked feminism as an ideology and movement by dismantling the category of woman, that's why Nussbaum is butthurt

what hype

Well, she's one of a few well known woman philosophers looking at ancient philosophy, and she tends to side with Rawlsian analytics. She had as a teacher, at one point, the brilliant classicist Seth Benardete, but she doesn't follow him in talent in any way. The best one can say about her work is that it's interesting, but that's really all. She gets attention for discussing emotions, feelings, passions, which, to her limited credit, were all underexplored by most analytic philosophers looking at the ancients, but both Continental and Straussian philosophers looking at the ancients have far greater grasp of those elements. Most of her work is milquetoast, and looks astounding only when compared with her autistic analytic peers. Is basically valued just for being a women in the field.

Ronna Burger makes her look like garbage by way of comparison, and isn't an ounce of the careerist Nussbaum is.

They're dumb enough to gobble up anything as long as you manage to draw a connection to da jooz.

Mostly relevant in Criminal/Penal law and Ethics. Outside of that - as you can see by this thread - she's a literal WHO. I like her. My professor was with "obsessed" with her.

You’re TERF, that’s why you object. Butler has done an excellent job in destroying Kristeva, Cixous and liberationist tendencies in Foucault.

this post really leavened my bread

butterfly is trans

I’m not, but I’m not a terf either.

That post seems rather hyperbolic. But do you wanna try explaining how there’s no such category as woman now?

>born to wasp elite
>converts to judaism (meme religion at this point)
>spends here days telling us why the status quo is actually good and aristotle's philosphy would approve it
I really don't blame the lower classes at all, our
"elite" class is pure infantile cancer.

What? Why?

>mostly just says obvious stuff but couches it in archaic terminology and relies on the fact that most people never actually read...so it seems like what she is saying is somehow novel or interesting.

Congratulations, you've cracked the code. Hope it's not too late to change your major, or you really like playing political games to get at the ever dwindling number of full time teaching positions.

This. She looks like Jaime Lannisterwith in drag.
