Is there any psychological writing that explains how the fuck furries happened? Is it a product of some fetishizing unconscious? Every time I've had this discussion with an actually furry they always go on the defense and say it's "not a sex thing".

Everyone is STILL buys into psychological typology, most notably Myers-Briggs (which practically plagiarized Jung).
He's not obscure at all, and most people besides JBP's uneducated fanbase would have already known of him.

But isn't prancing around in an animal suit to escape the human beneath an exploration in and of itself? Exploring some Other, something that isn't your physical self. A trying to Become something else, some Other or some sort of Ideal you have and by mimicking it you are one step closer to Becoming that thing.
I don't think most furfags refuse to admit that it's a fetish. But just because it's a fetish doesn't mean it doesn't have all of those other aspects as well. Just because something gets you off doesn't mean it doesn't have other purposes or ideas behind it. But also isn't sex one of the most primal and base ways of expressing one's self? All the raw emotion and feeling that comes through with that act can be extremely liberating and get your essence across much better than other forms of expressions, particularly when a partner is involved. But that isn't to say that it is a better way to express things or that is the only way the furfags do express things.
I mean just look at all the art and writing they do (and while yes most of it is pornographic that doesn't take away from it being a creative endeavor and expressing one's self.) Or the fursuits themselves, they're costumes and costumes have always played a major role in cultures throughout history, masquerading around as something else and in doing so becoming that thing.
I think most people just look at furfags and see the sex and don't like it so they just toss the whole thing out, and while it is fine to dislike the gratuitous aspects of it it is foolish to then degrade everything else about it because of that.
