Hank Williams or A.P. Carter

I'm a fan of the lyricists mentioned already.

It's too hard to pick a GOAT lyricist.
I would choose Leonard Cohen, Warren Zevon, Father John Misty, and probably a couple of others.

I hope the mods here spare me. Yea Forumss taste in lyrics and music in general is god awful and declining, besides maybe some users in /daily/, and I've been on that board for years

honestly, if anybody thinks lyricists can match real poets they didn't read enough good poetry. i'd like to see Dylan go against T.S.Eliot any time..

Well who do you think comes the closest

Leonard Cohen

Fucking love Townes. He has a real talent for taking cliche country music symbols like whip-poor-wills and railroads, and giving them a new life.

...

youtube.com/watch?v=imSFwqq4cO0

Early Cohen with some bible songs like "Story of Isaac", and some very specific Dylan songs, which arent surreal nonsence or phases where he didnt gove a shit, but real poetry, the first one that comes to mind is "When the ship comes in". But, if you're really into this stuff I recommend searching outside of the english language. Jacques Brel's Port of Amsterdam (search for live versions) is amazing, and so are Brecht/Weill collaborations the best one being "Pirate Jenny", done in a very good version by Nina Simone in 1961 live concert.

That’s a cool song but lyrics are garbage.

Brian Wilson with Van Dyke Parks on the assist.

But what do their lyrics MEAN??

Attached: image.jpg (800x609, 35K)

l,o,l

The only song that would hold up on its own as a poem is Zurich Is Stained by Pavement and even that's mostly because it's almost too clever to be a song.

Thick, black felt birds, are flying
With capes of solid chrome
With feathers of solid chrome
And beaks of solid bone
And bleached the air around them
White and cold well, well

Gareth Liddiard of The Drones and Tropical Fuck Storm.

So she will not see the shame that I know”

Van Dyke Parks

Eh, literature is shit these days anyway. Can it really be said most of the people who have won that award in the last several years really deserve it more than him?

this is the kind of brainlet that habits Yea Forums, holy fucking shit man, of course they deserve more than Dylan, the best lyricist in the world is still a mediocre poet

I'm not familiar with Dylan, but I know his name has stayed relevant for decades because of his lyrics, something that can't be said for many of those who have previously won these awards.

I'm not looking for validation but for recommendations. If I'll do this thread on Yea Forums I'll get Cohen, randy Newman, Dylan, that fag from nmh, mountain goats guy, and the thread is over. This board isnt that better by a long shot, but as you see people are more willing to try and recommend some good stuff, even if it is fisher price first non-anglosphere lyricists

I rarely listen to music these years, but when I do I come back to Townes and his live recordings. Great artist.

Difference between lyricism and poetics is trivial.

It really isn't. A text made to be sung will never be the same as a text made to be read. If you read aloud a song's text, 95% of times it sounds like shit. Also, I still have to find a lyricist with the same depth of the greatest poets.

One September morning when I was five
My daddy said "Son rise from your bed."
I thought I must be dreaming it's still dark outside
He said "Son if you fall behind you'll never get ahead
Here's your little brown cowboy shirt put it on
Here's your little brown cowboy pants put 'em on
Here's your little brown shoes can you tie them yourself?
Get into the car we're gone!"
We drove it seemed like forever
Further than I'd ever been away from home
Then my daddy stopped the car, and he turned to me
He said, "Son it's time to make us proud of you,
It's time to do what's right
Gonna have to learn to work hard"
I said, "Work? What are you talking about?
You're not gonna leave me here, are you?"
He said "Yes I am!"
And drove off into the morning light
For a while I stood there, on the sidewalk
A Roy Rogers lunch pail in my hand
Then I heard sweet children's voices calling
And I began to understand
They said, "Four eyes! Look like you're still sleeping!"
"Four eyes! Look like you're dead!"
"Four eyes! Where have you been keeping yourself?"
"Look like you been whupped upside the head."

Sixto Rodriguez has some good ones

Was it a huntsman or a player
That made you pay the cost
That now assumes relaxed positions
And prostitutes your loss?
Were you tortured by your own thirst
In those pleasures that you seek
That made you Tom the curious
That makes you James the weak?

And you claim you got something going
Something you call unique
But I've seen your self-pity showing
As the tears rolled down your cheeks

Soon you know I'll leave you
And I'll never look behind
'Cos I was born for the purpose
That crucifies your mind
So con, convince your mirror
As you've always done before
Giving substance to shadows
Giving substance ever more

And you assume you got something to offer
Secrets shiny and new
But how much of you is repetition
That you didn't whisper to him too

I'm a lot like my dad I would have to say
He's been wearing a beard ever since mom passed away
She would have hated it
Inspiring he likes to go to church to hear the choir sing
Roses and Bluejays
Winner comes game over
He's in the driveway removing snow with a flame thrower
Drives a hard bargain, knows how to get the deals
Spring fever hits he needs a new set of wheels
Every year it never fails
Roaming around in his home town beachcombing
Roses and Bluejays
I'm a lot like my father
He knows he should go to work but sometimes
He doesn't bother
Reads books of every sort
And gets all the news he needs from the weather report
The door stays open a few days and closes
What's more important than blue jays and roses?
Son of a gun, the old man is something else
In addition to being a bullfighter and magician
He's a lazy river, slow moving train
Future hall of famer, playing through the pain
He's a grizzly bear
And do you know one time he even saw a UFO?
My dad's favorite things are roses and bluejays
I'd say we're the same in more than a few ways we're
Full of beans and big ideas
'Cause I can't sleep I'm not sure why he is
Wide awake and off to the races
Out of gas and lost in space so
Full of beans and big ideas
'Cause I can't sleep I'm not sure why he is

I'd disagree with that to a certain extent and Townes is my favorite artist. Most of his best songs fit the classic country/folk vein, they're just written well enough to have a gravitas that isn't usually there.

bob dylan..?

I kinda like Dan Deacon

Not the user you responded to but that's precisely why I think Dylan shouldn't have gotten the award even if he was deserving. His place in the history books has been cemented for over half a century at this point, he really didn't need yet another award. Whoever else would've gotten it would have that much more recognition to his or her name.

>he really didn't need yet another award.
Awards are rarely "needed." They are either deserved or not, and if nobody deserve the award that year more than he did, he should have received it.

I don't think nobody deserved it more than him though. There were others who were just as worthy, that's the case in most categories every year.

He pulls to a picnic and builds a fire
December embers trickle up
Set roots in a soil sky as January's stars

Oh comely
I will be with you when you lose your breath
Chasing the only
Meaningful memory you thought you had left
With some pretty bright and bubbly
Terrible scene that was doing her thing on your chest
But oh comely
It isn't as pretty as you'd like to guess
In your memory you're
Drunk on your awe to me
It doesn't mean anything at all
Oh comely
All of your friends are all letting you blow
Bristling and ugly
Bursting with fruits falling out from the holes
Of some pretty bright and bubbly
Friend you could need to say comforting things in your ear
But oh comely
There isn't such one friend that you could find
Here standing next to me only my enemy
I'll crush him with everything i own
Say what you want to say hang for your hollow ways
Moving your mouth to pull out all your miracle for me
Your father made fetuses with flesh licking ladies
While you and your mother were asleep in the trailer park
Thunderous sparks from the dark of the stadiums
The music and medicine you needed for comforting
So make all your fat fleshy fingers to moving
And pluck all your silly strings and bend all your notes for me
Soft silly music is meaningful magical
The movements were beautiful all in your ovaries
All of them milking with green fleshy flowers
While powerful pistons were sugary sweet machines
Smelling of semen all under the garden was all you were needing
When you still believed in me
Say what you want to say and hang for your hollow ways
Moving your mouth to pull out all your miracle for me
I know they buried her body with others
Her sister and mother and 500 families
And will she remember me 50 years later
I wished i could save her in some sort of time machine
Know all your enemies
We know who our enemies are
Know all your enemies
We know who our enemies are
Goldaline my dear
We will fold and freeze together
Far away from here
There is sun and spring and green forever
But now we move to feel
For ourselves inside some strangers stomach
Place your body here
Let your skin begin to blend itself with mine

Scrape your knee: it is only skin
Makes the sound of violins

When I cut your hair, and leave the birds all the trimmings
I am the happiest woman among all women

And the shallow water stretches as far as I can see
Knee deep, trudging along —
The seagull weeps ‘so long’ —
I’m humming a threshing song —

Until the night is over, hold on
Hold on;
Hold your horses back from the fickle dawn

I have got some business out at the edge of town
Candy weighing both of my pockets down
Till I can hardly stay afloat, from the weight of them
(and knowing how the commonfolk condemn
What it is I do, to you, to keep you warm:
Being a woman. Being a woman.)

But always up the mountainside you’re clambering
Groping blindly, hungry for anything;
Picking through your pocket linings —
Well, what is this?
Scrap of sassafras, eh Sisyphus?

I see the blossoms broke and wet after the rain
Little sister, he will be back again
I have washed a thousand spiders down the drain
Spiders’ ghosts hang, soaked and dangling
Silently from all the blooming cherry trees
In tiny nooses, safe from everyone —
Nothing but a nuisance; gone now, dead and done —
Be a woman. Be a woman

The great truth is there isn't one
And it only gets worse since that conclusion
The irony of being an extension to nothing
And the force of inertia is now a vital factor

And there is despair underneath each and every action
Each and every attempt to pierce the armour of numbness
Burning bridges becomes a habit to support
And the front line expands like there's no tomorrow

I envy the maggots
Their stuff at least sticks together
Better than laudations of misinformed seers
And those are lengthy annals of shame that we work with

It's like dumping dead meat at the brink of Styx
With a barge that we made of what was left of Yggdrasil
After veterans of spiritual revolts were done with their armchairs
And I don't even remember which brink is which

The odour of sanctity is just refined stench of existence
Shining pearl of Augeas' crown pales in comparison

And there is despair underneath each and every action
Each and every attempt to pierce the armour of numbness
Burning bridges becomes a habit to support
And the front line expands like there's no tomorrow

The grotesque eagles of misfortune, well fed on Thanatos, sit still
It's the dignity of scavengers at the ever growing garbage dump of life

There is something about the rigid posture of a proper, authentic blind
As if extended arms reached to pass his blindness onto others
