There's a youtube channel, Midnight's Edge, that gets into the legal nuts and bolts of a lot of these corporate franchise goings-ons, and they claim that the reason all this Disney Star Wars shit has to use new characters and stories - but that are facsimiles of the old ones - is because they don't actually make a profit off the old properties.

This is why The Mandalorian is basically a complete copy of Boba Fett, without just using Boba (saying he survived the sarlacc), and even a pseudo-IG88.


See also the recent Star Trek movies, same thing. They jetisoned the old timeline and universe and made Kirk and everyone slightly different - costumes etc - because that way they could have full ownership rather than share profits with the previous studio.

Which is, I meant to say, why they won't make the park attractions based on the old, beloved Star Wars movies. The profits would still go to Lucas or something.
