I really enjoyed this, but I'm confused as to how they could possibly do a sequel. It was one of the few blockbusters these days that didn't really leave itself open for one. It wrapped up the story pretty conclusively and didn't do any post credit scenes (thank goodness).

>I really enjoyed this, but I'm confused as to how they could possibly do a sequel
That's because it was obviously intended as a proof of concept to determine if they could feasibly make a "live action" Pokemon movie with a loose and simple plotline to avoid being overly ambitious with their first outing. I'd say it kinda worked as it was overall well received, but the fact that a sequel is being made REEKS of producer meddling. It clearly wrapped itself up nicely and there's no reason for the Detective Pikachu series to continue as the story was resolved. My guess is the producers demanded a sequel so they can further test screening reception and save up money by reusing assets.
Unfortunately, i feel like this will only hurt the Pokeverse in the long run because of what we just mentioned: Detective Pikachu is an interesting concept and a charming way to introduce the series to the Big Screen, but the main part of the charm is the ridiculousness of the concept. But now the novelty is gone. It is no longer a draw towards a sequel. People already saw the film and walked out like "Huh... i guess a full-fledged Pokemon film can actually work out! Now we're ready for the REAL Pokemon movie!". If they give a DP 2 to the audience, hardly anyone will give a shit. I'm hoping they can the sequel and work on something more straight forwardly Pokemon. The demand is there.
It doesnt need sequel bait because the only thing you cared about were the pokemon CGI models """interacting""" in the real world.
The plot was simply there to reduce the number of pokemon they needed to model and animate.
You can do infinite amounts of Pokemon stories, but the Ryan Reynold Detective Pikachu is wrapped up and resolved. I just wanna see stuff about what horny teenage boys do with their female Blazikens and Gardevoirs.
Not even being a gatekeeper or anything, but I thought it was hot garbage:
>Low Pokemon variety because they didn't want to animated hundreds of different Pokemon
>Main character is awful and I barely remember him
>Main girl is a cutie, but again pretty bad beyond that
>Detective Pikachu/MC's dad is pretty okay, but that's mainly because it's Ryan Reynold's
>Main character does NOT look like he's remotely related to Ryan Reynolds to be his son
>Action scenes (or lack of)
There were plenty of Pokemon, I appreciated that they pulled them from all the gens instead of pandering exclusively to genwunners, and I say this as someone who started with gen 1 on release. Didn't even recognize the floating mushroom Pokemon since I haven't played the newer games as much but I was glad to see it. Also I'm not sure what you're talking about with a lack of action scenes considering they had that big over the top Mewtwo battle at the end.
Does the BluRay add a lot of good behind the scenes stuff?
>There were plenty of Pokemon
Not really, no. Pokemon are copy and pasted too much, especially in the parade segment. Go back and look user, everybody has the same few Pokemon.
>Also I'm not sure what you're talking about with a lack of action scenes considering they had that big over the top Mewtwo battle at the end
Yeah and that fight club sequence. Pokemon is literately centered around battles, so there should have been more.
I felt let down by the lack of people with evolved mons. Like, getting your starter or whatever mon you have up to a higher level is easy. Just have them fight a fuck ton of shit mons and they're there in no time. If a Psyduck is your main, how has he not evolved, does no one battle?
95% of the pokemon in the films are seen in the first few shots entering the city. It's almost all reused models.
For instance they start with Growlithe shown being used by the police, exactly what everyone would want to see.
And then later in the film everyone and their mom had a growlithe.
And the action scene? C'mon man. The end battle had almost nothing to do with then being pokemon. Jumping on balloons is standard action flick nonsense. The only real pokemon battle we got was in the underground tournament.
They said "hey, let's figure out what makes pokemon popular"
And did their best to remove every single one of those things (capturing and battling pokemon).
And dont get me started on the pointless waste of 15 minutes Torterra scene which again was actually just run of the mill summer action end of world flick sequences rehashed go show torterra at the last few seconds.
Apparently the lack of battles was an intentional choice.

>does no one battle
I mean, battles are outlawed in the setting (probably so they wouldn't have to animate as much), but does NOBODY travel from other regions though?
It's a movie for 9 year olds
whats wrong with you all, It would be different if you were critiquing it because you have kids nephews who watched it
contemplate what you are doing
It would have cost a billion dollars if they'd used too many Pokemon, considering the movie made only a modest profit I think it was for the best that they restrained themselves. Also a detective movie doesn't really need action anyway, it's about the mystery. Would be like hamfisting a fight scene into Murder on the Orient Express.
Remember the time Yea Forums unironically claimed that this movie would make over $1 bn and send Disney running with its tail between its legs?
I noticed that the movie was BOTH WB and Legendary Pictures, it felt like two big companies were teaming up specifically to challenge Disney and they still couldn't beat them.
>how they could possibly do a sequel.
They don't. This was easily the most original thing to happen to the series since 1998, don't fuck it up now.
They actually confirmed a sequel was being made as far back as January, before the movie was even out.
Pokemon battling was outlawed so the Pokemon in the city wouldn't get experience on their own, allowing the human/Pokemon fusions to have all the growth and "reaching full potential".
Keeping your Pokemon outside of Pokeballs was encouraged so everyone's Pokemon would be able to breath in the gas during the parade.
R is based on the Berserk Gene, the hidden, one-use, one-per-game item found outside Mewtwo's former Cerulean Cave home in G/S/C. The Berserk Gene confuses and sharply raises the attack of the Pokemon that uses it.
While I loved everything else about the movie, it had two big plot issues:
- When Pikachu was injured, why did Tim just assume there would be a healer Pokemon nearby? Why not just drive Pikachu back to the city for treatment?
- Why did Mewtwo need The Son to fully revive Harry?
Wait, why would they make an item that can only be used in a single battle, especially if you can't access it until that late in the game? I can't imagine any battle being important enough that you'd want to use it. Is it just meant to be a flavor text sort of thing?
It was alright until the last 30mins
The ending sucked, the whole mind control crap
Ryan Reynolds must go undercover to stop Team Rocket from stealing Pokemon. He uses the Mewtwo thing to do it.
Idk how it was in GSC but in Battle Tower/ Frontier/ whatever, any one-use held item is restored at the end of the battle, pretty much making that their only use. Only a dummy would use a one-use held item outside of that
Why didn't he shove him in a pokeball and keep him in stasis that way so he could treat the head injury at a Pokemon Center?
Didn't they did something similar with Entei in a movie? They would probably do something similar but with other Pokemons
Personally I would love to see something like mistery dungeon
I honestly thought it was a joke at first, it looked like a big stone was coming down to hit him and then he got knocked out by a pebble. How the heck did that hurt him?
Main girl is literally unnecessary and literally just an excuse to make the protagonist hetero
The Entei movie was actually fucking awesome, I'd like to see something like that adapted to live action.
>Is awkward because now the son and Pikachu know eachother.
>Montage of Ryan Reynolds learning Pikachu's moves and failing.
>Final fight involves him finally pulling off a Z-Move.
Gravity. That's why you wear hard hats at a construction site.
>I really enjoyed this
Please tell me what you enjoyed, because absolutely nothing in this movie was redeemable.
That main bad guy's plot was hilarious, the ditto reveal, Ryan Reynolds as Pikachu. I liked everything but the two main humans. Bad acting and a really simple plot. No real pokemon fights.
Why did they choose "Omar chaparro" for this movie? He's literally a fucking joke and his acting in this movie is fucking horrible and cringe
He was barely in it and Pikachu kept on mocking his character, I don't know who he is but I found his presence completely inoffensive.
Haha, Wouldn't it be funny to think of what the Greninjas would've done to Lucy if Tim hadn't arrived? It would be absolutely hysterical if they had ganged up on her and stripped her pesky clothes off while she cried for help, lol. Then one of them could lift her up and silence her with a kiss before he begins shoving meters of his thick, slimy tongue down her bulging throat while she helplessly whimpered and thrashed about, haha. It would be even funnier if the other 2 we're going to town on her nethers like groceries, hehe. Then the one licking her cute butt also begins to shove his whole tongue up her butt, lol! It'd be funny because you could see the bulge traveling through her insides and looping endlessly, meeting halfway with the other Greninja's tongue while tears kept pouring out of her disturbed eyes UwU
Cheap. They paid for Reynolds and all that CGI. Every single scene had CGI
dude i loved it
Is basically the Mexican Adam Sandler,a fucking joke
She was worth it solely because they drew her in the Pokemon art style in the credits which turned her into a top-notch waifu.
user, pls don't do this to me. I'm on NoFap this month and i'm gonna reach breaking point at this rate.
Your first mistake was thinking Game Freak was competent.
>Love Ball
Intended: More effective on Pokemon of opposite gender.
Actual: More effective on Pokemon that are the same gender and species.
>Fast Ball
Intended: More effective on Pokemon that can flee battles.
Actual: More effective on Magnemite, Grimer, or Tangela.
>Moon Ball
Intended: More effective on Pokemon that evolve using a Moon Stone.
Actual: More effective on Pokemon that evolving using a Burn Heal.
Kathryn newton is fucking gorgeous, so I don't blame him
I would catch Pokemon in unusual balls anyway just because I liked having the different picture on their stat screen and the different animation when I sent them out. I was fond of the Premier Ball.
We're talking about GSC, which had none of what you just said.
What other notable roles has she gotten?
She was in Westworld.
Went for Ludicolo. Will come back for Ludicolo.
They can do literally anything as long as they don’t cast an ugly ass 56% as the mc.
He was in the movie for like two seconds though.
What did he mean by this?
i'm just glad the MC was a 21 year old rather than a kid.
I thought the soundtrack was pretty good.
WarnerBros wants to avoid the "pokemons fighting" thing. I can't imagine WB pulling this off without any controversy. Even though it's literally the thing people love about pokemon
>Diplo had a cameo in the movie but did not work on the music at all
I don't get why.
That's not true, people also love Secret Bases. So make a Pokemon movie about that and we're set.
One thing I noticed about the movie is that they made a point of saying the name of as many Pokemon as they could so that even if normies didn't recognize them they'd immediately find out the name.
people as in people who play pokemon games
I'm talking about the critics and twitter crowd.
Oh, well in that case there's nothing to worry about considering this movie still turned out to be both profitable and critically well received. This movie is now officially the best reviewed video game adaptation of all time.
*Blocks your path*
Tsk.
Not everyone battles in Pokemon. Somebody has to be a farmer or an accountant.
Making the protagonist of the movie an insurance appraiser was perhaps one of the boldest choices I have seen in a Hollywood film in years.
A ton of stuff, actually.
For me, it was Bulbasaur.
more than make him an uncharismatic mulatto?
I didn’t like her at all in her intro scene, but she really grew on me as the bubbly qt
