Why were their films so kino?

they literally invented kino

They were. Then the state collapsed. Leviathan was painfully beautiful, Putin didn't like it.

Literally cannot name you a single good kino the Soviets ever made.

"Montages were a mistake" -Eisenstein

They were kino despite the Soviet movement. That is what makes them really special.

there was no capitalist mode of production that was entirely concerned with profit so it did not impede on the artistic integrity of the film or the filmmakers

woe is me: the film industry

Stalker

The Stalker and that one which is like Steins;Gate (don't remember the name, something about 'changing profession')

any tarkovsky

>put movie on
>these nibbas start revolving

This. Also being commisioned by a single entity (a King or dictator or theocrat) or at least studying under someone who was is a prerequisite for high art.

But they still had to 'answer' to the state, so most of their films are veiled propoganda

This, you can rip on Communism all you want but as a system it provided the kind of financial security you just can't get in Capitalist systems - even with countries having 'socialst art programs' it's never enough compared to the entire state being a beneficiary. The only challenge then is being smart enough to get past the censorship, which ironically is easy in Communism because you have a state run by low-brow types who have no interest in art films. Truly a weird chain of events creating the perfect kino environment.

There were censors trying to control the best directors, which drove them to fight harder to make what they wanted.

The only correct answer: they didn't make movies following the profit motive, because it wasn't a capitalist country. They didn't have market research on popular content, they didn't reshoot/reboot the same fucking move 6 times, because movie was an artform, not a get rich quick scheme and satiate your profit hungry investors racket.

No board of censorship is as harsh and brutal as some executives trying to make profitable trash.

They had a lot of money to spend on film, thanks to the people they didn't bother to feed.

dumb zoomer understanding of history. probably american. go shove your head up your dogmatic shit filled arse

That's the Russian national character. Looking at their country and its history, it's obvious why they see the world that way.

yeah I'd wanna fucking kms if I was born in russia, too

Tarko/v/sky is trash along with Eisenstein, Vertov, Kalatozov, and Dovzhenko

You can make a movie without any executives you mongoloid. Meanwhile in the USSR every movie was subjected to the government censor

They believed that everything they do is gold. Look at how they got butthurt with Hepburn's War and Peace that they made their own version which is awarded and up to now, still the best version of War & Peace out there.
