Kuwait was historically part of Iraq and a no-name sea village that the British used as a protectorate to declare a huge amount of desert land under it and essentially cut off Iraq from the sea. Iraq was just taking back it's own territory, not to mention the Kuwaitis were slant drilling Iraqi oil.

Iraq even offered to withdraw in exchange for an Israeli withdrawal from the west bank and the Golan, and a Syrian wihdrawal from Lebanon, and the U.S. rebuffed both offers.
