What's weird to me is that at no point in human history has any society genuinely, provably believed the earth to be flat. That people used to think this in the medieval period is false.

It's more that if you change even a minor element of the equation you also have to change 100 other equations to make it work, and if you change those 100 equations you need to change 1000 equations to make those work and so on until you basically end up with 1+1 = 3.

For example, if the earth is flat, the equation that calculated thermodynamics no longer applies. And the millions of other equations that depend on the thermal energy being right no longer applies. Which means you fundamentally need to change how we calculate physics, and if we change how we fundamentally calculate physics we need to fundamentally change math.

Because if we use the current calculations and apply them to a flat earth they wouldn't work.

Let me put it like this. Say I want to check the temperature of my chicken in the oven. I use Celsius, which relies on measuring pressure for it's calculation. The pressure equation goes something like: pressure = force divided by area.
Now say suddenly it turns out my oven is infact a frying pan, and the movement just hid the fact that ovens are real, as you can imagine a frying pan has vastly different heat distribution, yet my chicken has the same exact temperature, while all equations says it should be 5 degrees cooler. That means pressure no longer equals force divided by area. Which means the equations for calculating force and area no longer works, which means math no longer works.

People who feel confused and powerless often turn to ludicrous theories to help them make sense of everything.

In this case, it's easier for someone to imagine that millions of "scientists" and "government people" are lying about the shape of the world than for that person to consider that they're powerless and inconsequential. By possessing a "secret truth" (the world is actually flat) they create imaginary power that they can hold over their perceived enemies.

our current physics work perfectly (on a planetary scale at least) with the sphere projection, no solid reason comes to think otherwise, no clear motive of why would otherwise be covered up and the proposed flat projection makes no sense by the same logic that currently works
