Have sex, Rimmer.

he does, he doesn't change

I don't think he ever does, does he? He drops a lot of stories of his growing up but they all end up with him fucking a plant pot or something.

He fucked Eva McGruder because she had a concussion and thought he was someone else. He also slept with the holoship lady.

I once marathoned all of Red Dwarf and it gave my inner monologue Lister's accent.
I feel a lot more sympathy for Rimmer because of this.

literally a projection

You're gettin' tetchy, user.

>tfw the archetype has always been the same, they've just been known differently across the ages

Dont forget he collected and painted minis. As a millennial this would have also included Warhammer.

Attached: 1549441652671.jpg (1024x565, 92K)

Rimmer's a god tier character. The Beginning is one of my favorite episodes because I loved seeing him finally save the day and get some closure, even if he's still a git.

the only warhammer fag I know is a massive basedboy who told me it was “interesting” (in a positive way) to cast Achilles and Patroclus as black in that bbc show
He then tried arguing that Greeks had colonies in Africa so it was completely plausible

Easily one of the best jokes.

yeah its a shame they continued on and kept him a twat without any development for the next season.

those are good picks but I'd swap justice for better than life or meltdown.

Truly an inspiration to us all.

>He's Arnold, Arnold, Arnold Rimmer.
>Without him life would be much grimmer.
>He's handsome, trim, and no-one slimmer.
>He will never need a zimmer.

>you make love like a japanese meal.
>small portions but so many courses
It's been a while but I think that's the backhanded complement she gives.

>czech subtitles
it was really really popular in this country wasnt it

It also has small, but faithful fanbase in Poland. Which is admirable, since the show was never really promoted and always got a shitty time slot on public TV.

it still kills me to think about how much longer the show could've stayed good if rob grant hadn't left and doug naylor wasn't a hack.

I wouldn't call him a hack, but the
>let's try something new
approach was a fucking failure.
Also, they've botch written a third (meaning: sequel to the second) book in Red Dwarf novel series. Both were completely different, but somehow Rimmer manages to die in both of them.

i work with a polish person and only last week did i mention red dwarf and found out she doesn't like it.

>she
woman don't know shit about comedy, no matter where they're from

I'd agree with you if the show stayed dead after season 8, or even after back to earth, but the revival seasons have been so painful that a hack is all I can call him. it's amazing how the crew can run across a ship full of wacky guest-star humans, have their adventure, and then next week lister goes back to calling himself the 'last human' like they didn't just happen across johnny vegas in a stupid outfit. part of the original show's appeal was the lonely post-apocalyptic setting but the modern show completely ignores that angle.

>pretending red dwarf is some high brow entertainment
lol

women don't get toilet humour either

I'm a swede and we used to watch this show in english class when I was in high school

The best Red Dwarf are the unabridged audiobooks of the first two novels performed by Chris Barrie.

So, would you have sex with your female alternative dimension self?

I'm a turnip

Probably not.

>> member of a celibate society
Like a monk.
>> loves fascism and military discipline
The closest to meritocracy we'll ever get.
>> obsessed with self-improvement, fails to improve himself a bit
No need to improve perfection.
>> blames others for his life failures
As is usually the case in life, which is a long series of being crucified by the shortcomings of others.
>> sees women only as sexual objects
Which is precisely what they are.

Is that why tumblr seems to think Harry Potter is black now?

Arnold got he wanted (or thought he wanted) on that planet where his original self became "the template" for the entire population, including the women. As I recollect his own people also slung him in jail for hundreds (?) of years.

Does he do the accents? I remember he nailed Lister's and Kryten's in some of the eps

Basil Brush*

Sounds like a decent dude.

Have you watched any of Rob's post-Dwarf stuff? It's worse than modern Dwarf by a long shot.

He nails all the voices.

He was an impressionist before RD. Lister was a performance poet, Cat was a dancer, Holly a stand up. None of them had acted

>Cat was a dancer

Last novel went completely nuts with an evil Lister copy and also resulted in Rimmer performing the only heroic moment in his life before being destroyed right?

i remember reading lister going back to earth and there are giant cockroaches and the planet tries to kill him

/ourguy/

Because that's how it works on Discord

The earth also gets knocked out of orbit by a norfener spelling out his name in billions of tons of shit and accidentally igniting it

I think the evil Lister was the 3rd book and the 4th was the cockroaches one. Both of which are not in continuity with each other as they both were suppose to carry on from where the 2nd book left off.

i also remember the reverse world was longer in the book than the show

He had sex on that episode where he tries to join the crew of the holoship.

Worst Kochanski

It's decided than, we will consult Holly

>fanatastic swimmer

Been a pretty smooth life, eh? That's not how you become Ace Rimmer.

Chloe Annett was by far the best Kochanski. No one wants to hear Clare Grogan's voice for any longer than a couple of lines.

when it comes to those seasons I think we're splitting hairs, but what do you prefer about 7?

Nice digits. I loved the relationship between Kochanski and Kryten and how steadily jealous he got as well as displaying other emotions.

So what is it?

Attached: hqdefault (1).jpg (480x360, 8K)

giving kochanski more than a couple lines was a terrible idea. totally reinventing her personality from the ground-up and then contriving a way for her to join the crew was sheer retardation.

I remember thinking that the season after the feature length wasnt that bad (better than 7 and 8) but also had a habit of the episodes ending very abruptly.

that's something I noticed a lot of. I can't tell if they had less runtime to work with or what but a lot of episodes straight up don't resolve at all.

Back to Earth

The King of the Potato people was an asshole

That was just an obvious clue to Rimmers real personality hidden in the dot over i

It's annoying cause apparently all the special effect shot on film were junked not too long ago by the BBC.

Look up the airing effects of some scenes vs the toiched sfx ridden versions.
Its the soul/soulless meme

Red dwarf's premise was actually creepy as fuck. There is, by all accounts, absolutely no alien life in the universe. All life is from planet earth or otherwise created by or descended from humanity and other earth creatures. No evidence for humanity existing in the present, just relics from the past.

Unironically my female self would be like a solid 6, bordering on 7, but elevating herself to like 8 by dressing in thotty shit (slutty but not necessarily revealing).

Better than 7-9, but no patch on 1-6.

Everything after S6 is shit. The last couple have been merely mediocre, they only seem better because they are an improvement over the total shit of S7 onwards. I can't watch anymore seeing their aging fat bodies is just too depresing desu. S3 is when they got a decent budget and could do more models and effects. Even S5 and S6 were showing signs of getting stale with the running jokes like Space Corps directives and Cat's sense of smell. Polymorph II was just playing to the in crowd with Dwayne, Ace etc., was mildly amusing but really lazy writing. One of the writers left after S6 and it really shows. Inquisitor and Legion are my favourite episodes. I admit I laughed at the Ace/Lister episode in S7 but it is hands down the worst season, nu-Kochanski had no comic timing. I vaguely remember the crew being reincarnated with the captain from the Aliens Special Edition colony.

No, scratch that. I'm looking DANGEROUS!

Duane Dibbly

He was very cross.

The CGI skutters were the worst, and I hated the way they made RD itself look long and sleek. The classic Dwarf look like a short, fat garbage scow, as it should.

Even worse, just like the "remastered" TOS, they cut out actual episode content to fit in more "beauty shots" no one wanted.

Pretty sure there was a time rift in that episode. Those people were from the past.

yeah they were, and the episode didn't kill them or imply they got home somehow. the whole thing just gets dropped. this kind of thing happens a lot too. they keep stumbling upon humans whenever they need them and sometimes naylor remembers to kill them off at the end to preserve the status quo. nevermind how often they've accidentally found or invented time travel to arbitarily resolve the plot.

I wouldn't mind seeing them try to tackle larger story arcs again. The novels are some of the best Red Dwarf. I think the real problems with 7 and 8 is that Kochanski offset the cast's dynamic, and the humour just generally wasn't as clever. There's a lot of gross out humour in those series that just isn't all that funny, like Lister getting raped by a zombie, or dinosaur poopoo.

Threadly reminder to read the books. Yes, all of them

A series set around Better than Life MK2 would be great. The books mentioned that the one in the series was the initial model that wasn't as addictive due to the conscious interface.
If they finish it all off with Lister kickstarting the universe, I'd be happy.

The first few seasons were less comedy and more sci-fi and as such used some pretty sophisticated premises just for comedy. Future Echoes and Thanks for the Memory were great concepts. Unfortunately once Kryten joined permanently it became more of a sitcom.

Kryten was hit and miss in series 3 but was brilliant in series 4-6 and even dare I say it, series 7.

The fault I felt in back to earth and the blackadder special is that they removed the laugh track, but still left in pauses for where the laugh should have been. It's really akward.

used to wank to this lads

I used to go to the red dwarf webpage every day after the film was announced. Even joined their email listing.
I was really bummed out when they canceled the film. I don't remember the reason why it was canceled though.

My only bittersweet joy was seeing Rimmer in the Tomb Raider movies after.

He even talked about it on the Can't Smeg, Won't Smeg cooking special.

It is if you do what I do, and remind yourself every morning you wake, that Red Dwarf series 8 never happened.

I got a bad rubber fetish, and her shiny top got me going a lot, my guy

it's bullshit that after all these years they just left us hanging with Out of Time, do you think everyone is dead or do you think they undid everything when the time machine exploded?

7 still had adventures didn't it? Season 8 had the restored crew etc. It was just a completely different show. The reaction of Lister to the restored hierarchy of Red Dwarf didn't sit well with me either, after everything he's seen and done, he just went back to being ship's lacky?

It was real sci-fi, an exploration of what it means to be human, rather than what it means to fugg aliens etc.

Having said that, didn't they meet "God" in a recent revival episode? I can't remember if it was man made.

Except Lister is god, he started the big bang.

The middle series have some good sci-fi premises though. What about Back to Reality, or The Inquisitor?

not him but it always bugged me that the inquisitor visited them at that point, instead of at the end of their lives. surely they can't justify their entire life if they haven't finished living it yet? it's a fun episode though.

Sure

I assume that the universe was a living being and we are the equivalent of bacteria to it. He mentioned other universes so he probably had friends.

I think all the studios they shopped it around to wanted more marketable actors. One famously suggested Hugh Grant for Lister.

They did University Challenge.

I think they dropped his issue with his parents, though. He's still a prick, that won't change over night, but he doesn't blame his issues on anyone anymore.

I also loved The Beginning because Cat of all people helped Rimmer out. It was an odd but interesting idea that the guy who cares about Rimmer the least was in his corner the most.

Meltdown isn't as bad as people say it is, but I certainly wouldn't put it very high.
I almost put Better Than Life on there, though. It's such an awesome episode.
I loved Justice for not just being a hilarious episode, but because the idea of the Justice Field was really interesting, and it really gave you a look into Lister and Rimmer's sense of morality.

I like the boring brown one, to be honest. It suits him best.

Kochanski shouldn't have even been a crewmember. She's the unobtainable idea that reminds Lister that he'll never get the life he wanted. Making her a crewmember kills that and just makes her a lamer version of Arnie.

How come they didn't use the time drive to go back to Lister's time on Earth if they could use it to go back to the 63 for the assassination of JFK?
Not trying to be a smart arse, is there an actual explanation anywhere?

Gotta go with his original outfit. I perfectly made him look like a tool.

Because they learn that changing the past is bad

Fuck that episode in general, but they did go back to his time once in the ship, and they were still billions of lightyears away from earth so it didn't matter.

>Duane Dibley flossing after he chops up the onion

Attached: 1568156542706.jpg (184x184, 11K)

I loved him in 3 though. I liked his relationship with Lister, and how he just wanted to be a total asshole but couldn't because of his programming.

Every few years I kinda forget what happened in this show and I rewatch it and enjoy it all the same.

Easily one of the best comedies ever. It's kinda stupid, formulaic, but it always seems to be so fresh and creative at the same time.

The first person Inquisitor met wasn't very old either. His whole idealogy is based on you having enough time to live a full life, which isn't your entire lifespan.

I disagree with this. Justice, Inquisitor, Back To Reality, Legion, Gunmen of the Apocalypse, Dimension Jump, Out of Time, and The Last Day all on the top of my head were extremely science fiction heavy, moreso than most of 1 and 2's episodes.

So what actually is a stasis leak?

they make a big deal about that in season 6, it's probably one of my favourite punchlines
>Of course. We're still in deep space, sir, only now we're in deep space in the 15th century. Isn't it wonderful?
I guess the time machine got magicked into working how the writer wanted the same way the tiny ship transformed and suddenly had a ton of rooms and a long ass ventilation system.

one of my favourite moments desu

As far as I'm aware it was the first sitcom to do the whole sci-fi parody thing, except for like The Jetsons, so it was quite revolutionary in that sense. Doesn't seem like much in a post-Futurama world, but there was nothing really like it at the time.

That JFK episode was just garbage in general.

only time i had a wet dream it had chloe annett in it. thank you kochanski

There's still nothing quite like Red Dwarf. It takes elements of the best science fiction shows like classic Who, Star Trek, etc, but makes the lead characters a bunch of dumbasses that hate their lives. It was honestly genius.

>we can go back in time on earth now, don't ask,
I'm almost certain the modifications that allowed travel through time AND space were elaborated on, but I can't remember the specifics. Did they steal the modified time drive from their future selves?

Who wins in a dogfight?

Reverse Mary sue? The appeal of Lister is he is an everyman. Even a caricature like Rimmer has his moments, big feels when he does the right thing. S6 had the perfect ending.

Flashheart wins the dogfight, but ace would land in his plane, hurl him out with a one liner and sleep with Bob.

Who slays more pussy?

Classic JMC khaki, all the way.

I hated this character when I was a kid, but I appreciate him a lot more as I grew up. I think there's a little bit of him in all of us.

>He also slept with the holoship lady
we've been through this Geordi, it doesn't count.

In that case the idea of Lister not returning home is retarded.

They were trying to go to Lister's favourite curry house when they landed in the book depository. I don't remember every line, but most of the potential plot holes were covered by dialogue, even if only briefly.

she ruined an entire season

Each of the crew has something we can relate to. Lister is a bum that wasted all of his potential, but means well.
Rimmer is that asshole that blames everything on his upbringing.
Kryten is a guy who wants to be more than he is, but is bogged down by rules.
Cat is pure vanity and confidence.

Seasons 7 and 8 were disasters with or without her, she was just a mascot for what went wrong.

Kochanski's inclusion kind of fundamentally changes what the series is. Part of the humour of Red Dwarf is how utterly hopeless and depressing Lister's predicament is. He's probably the last human alive, probably never going to see Earth again, in love with a woman who's been dead for millions of years, and stuck with only insane and neurotic life-forms for company. When you suddenly introduce Kochanski into the mix, alive and well, it becomes a different kind of series. Plus the interactions of a bunch of males being males is different to a bunch of males and a woman who's pants they want to get into. It just subtly offsets the whole dynamic.

That sounds like rape by deception

everyone ends up shifting gears. kochanski becomes the new voice of reason and kryten becomes the neurotic one who fucks up. lister has no foil so he just kind of mopes around and dotes on her. the cat doesn't really pair off with anyone. it used to be you could divide the four of them into any arrangement and it'd all work.

it gets elaborated on in the book. she knew who he was and was actually into him, but rimmer was so embarassed he avoided her and never found out.

Didn't they have a kid together in one of the later books? It's been forever since I've read the post-BTL novels.

Yeah, I think so. His son's basically Ace Rimmer Jr, and is disappointed to finally meet his dad, and find him the way he is.

>Lister using the AR machine to fuck fictional women
If they only knew how right they were at the time.

I think he considers a cut off point from were you are to set in your ways to even change.

I'll never understand the people who actually enjoy these new seasons. They're so painful to get through and make Seasons 7 and 8 look amazing in comparison.

Seasons 1-6 are still GOAT tier TV. Shame Rob Grant left, could have had a few more great seasons. Season 6 is easily my favourite.

Unironically worse than seasons 7-8. At least they have a few funny lines here and there. Season 8 is actually kinda underraed, it has a nice comfy setting and arc, and there are a lot of legitimate funny moments.

They vary in quality, but I find them fun.

wtf, Cat was in blade 2?

>tfw

The one with Vegas in it was sort of fun. Considering what the world is like atm.
Fuck the Jesus one, it was not funny. Plus it retconed Rimmer's family religion.
Skipper was only fun because of the appearance of the old cast.

Rob Grant came back, guys...
Seriously, why is he on set for this, of all things? Am I being trolled?

He was also in this. Pure kino this is.

I thought Fathers and Suns, The Beginning, Samsara, and Krysis were legitimately good episodes.
Others range from cute, to cringe.

The face of /pol/

One of my favorite moments in the entire show is when lister locks himself in the escape pod with hundreds of packs of vindaloo, it was cathartic

Who else could we truely love other than ourselves?

sadly no

Don't do that to me, man.
Yeah...

I love vindaloo and lager, but also always carry a pen, what am I?

ALPHABETI-SPAGHETTI

Long time fan, thank you for posting this... so much of the history I was not aware of at all.
Seriously, thank you!

If Rob Grant and Rimmer never leave, and by proxy they don't make all those stupid changes like film without a live audience, the shit cgi, 8 eps from 6, adding Kochanski etc etc.

Would Season 7 have been based kino? I think it would have.

This. My female self would be an 8. I'm a pretty handsome guy but I'm bald and under 6ft

it would've needed another mixup. I like the idea of them finding red dwarf again and spending the season trying to take back control after whatever happened to it (assuming it wasn't the nanos).

Holly (M) > Rimmer > Cat > Lister > Holly (F) > Kryten > Kochanski

Fight me cunts

Fair

Winnie the pooh execution was a masterpiece

Meltdiwn was one of the funniesr episodes, never understood why it gets so much hate. Sure its stupid, but who cares, it has more jokes than Justice or Inquisitor.

can't, shan't

somewhere around series 2 or 3 RD started to disregard continuity with the previous world-building, and by series 5 it was a poor imitation of itself so i dropped it
