The quality does feel like a major step up from the animated series. I love the tv show too but I wish it could have be more like this. It was also the only time the Transformers actually killed each other which gave it a lot different vibe, much more like the superior stories of the comics .

I remember being exposed to trasnsformers for the first time by a shoddy VHS and dubious dub of this movie In early 90ies (slav born In Baltia). It was something else. I was fucking flored by intensity, violence and pure levels of kino. When I got my hands on the original show, it seemed like a joke, a pale shadow of the movie.

Pretty much but it wasnt his fault. He was commander of an exploration team, not trained in combat. Early episodes you can clearly see he has issues with giving orders and feels the need to explain every decision he makes. Not something you want in a battlefield general.

They had no idea while writing the movie that kids actually liked the characters, they were concerned with giving the new toy line the spotlight.

Wasn't there something about Peter Cullen making sure he always played Optimus as a calm and firm character because he knew there were kids watching who could use a good father figure in their lives?

I heard once that he actually helped out with the script and even compared the writing to King Lear. I like to think that he just acted grumpy to the media because he didn't want them knowing he was having fun with a kid's film.

I read all the way through More Than Meets the Eye and it was amazing. As it goes, there is a lot of really gay identity politics shit that gets forced in there, but it never affects the story as much as you'd think.
