This is pretty much my problem with it. Well made movie, nearly excellent in all cinematic aspects, but falls short because of a weak script that assumes every charachter is an absolute retard, even when you've established them as being relatively smart to that point.
Also the parents death was grotesque for the sake of nothing else. It takes the resonant message that "anyone can be co-opted by a cult in the right circumstances" and makes it "someone who was driven CRAZY by some tragedy might be brainwashed with HALLUCINOGENS"
