I would have waited until after I graduated college to begin writing any names in the Death Note. I would be planning everything, calculating, considering, until I felt I had a solid plan and no way of being caught.

So if he wanted to confirm the authenticity of the death note, it makes no sense for him not to wait for them to begin the process of dying before exposing himself. He just had to wait 1 more second, if the death note was real the first person to have their name written down would fall to their knees and start dying of a heart attack, in another second the next person would. Right after the first person falls, Light would know it's real and then he could reveal himself and it's not like waiting 1 more second would make it impossible for him to gloat since all the other people would still be standing and the one person who fell to his knees would still be alive. But it's not as bad writing as the previous example which is why the author went with this scenario.
