They didn't call the ship "the Enterprise" on Enterprise, they just called it "Enterprise". As best I can tell, the UPN shows dropped the article as some stupid brand synergy gimmick so that when they talk about the ship, it also sounds like they're talking about the show ("on Voyager", "on Enterprise"). If you check the Voyager scripts, the characters refer to every other Federation ship with the article ("the Prometheus", "the Equinox", "the Dauntless", "the Enterprise"), it's just their own ship that's super special for some reason. (And before you say it, no, they even call it "Voyager" before they get to the Delta Quadrant, and the Equinox crew still calls their own ship "the Equinox".)

The name wasn't an institution yet. I took it to mean that Janeway and Archer viewed their vessels as akin to living things, and referred to them as you would a person. Janeway even talked to the ship. Picard never did that.

Paris refers to it as “The Voyager” once but it sounds dumb. Voyager sounds better. On ENT they were going for more of a NASA feel.

In the sky above them an enormous hologram suddenly appeared. Floating in the void beneath the dome was a huge reproduction of B’Elanna Torres’ naked body. The Klingon gaped up at herself, shocked to see her firm breasts, flat stomach and perfect peach ass projected so massively, visible in perfect detail to every man in the stadium. When she had been told of the slave market she had imagined auction rooms with a few dozen people inside. But now her gorgeous body was visible to just over a hundred thousand, with every curve, every mole, every bump on her areolas on display!
The gravshacks on Torres’ wrists hummed, producing gravity fields that lifted and repelled each other. B’Elanna found herself forced to hold her arms out at her sides. The bracelets cruelly lifted a few inches, making the Klingon stand on tip toe and making her space her feet widely to keep her balance. In this way B’Elanna was fully exposed to the crowd, her brown nips shaking slightly on her breasts as she tried not to fall. She flushed with shame but had to swallow her anger, furious of being so humiliated in front of so many Ferengi and helpless to do anything about it.
“The lovely B’Elanna is twenty-two years old,” Golga began, and then began to lie. “A descendant of Klingon royalty and a princess by the standards of her barbaric people, Torres entered Starfleet academy but was expelled after several sexual escapades with students and instructors. It seems she couldn’t keep her Klingon fires under control.”
“That’s a lie!” shrieked the outraged Torres but without a microphone like Golga’s her voice was inaudible to those in the huge stadium. All her shout did was make her boobs tremble on her chest, reminding all who were looking of how surprisingly soft the Klingon’s melons were.

Yes, they were. Berman was not pleased by the initial concept of Voyager centering around the static between the Starfleet and Maquis crewman and so he basically gave Braga the creative lead in the writer's room. It pissed off a lot of the old guard who were annoyed by so much studio meddling, as there had been very little of it in the past. Berman started throwing his weight around during Voyager and Braga, being a hopelessly ambitious bootlicker, sucked his cock to get what he wanted.
Enterprise was a natural progression afterwards.
Oliver Rodriguez
It's not even bullshit stuff like the number of torpedoes or shuttle crashes. It's when something is a major plot point and they forget it ever happened. For example.
>Tuvok and Vorik are the only two Vulcans on board. Vorik gets pon farr and tries to fuck B'Elanna, because there are no female Vulcans on the ship.
>in later episodes there's a female Vulcan crewman in the background
>in the final episode where Tuvok gets Vulcan dementia in the future, Janeway asks if a mind meld with "the other Vulcans" (plural) on the ship will cure him, but Tuvok says none of them are compatible. Vorik is the only other Vulcan on board, there can't be more than one.

To be fair, this is just part of having a large writer's room on any television show. There are bound to be inconsistencies and areas of overlap where things don't make perfect sense. You had the main core of writers and then occasionally they'd get episodes written from outside and one of the core guys would write the teleplay.
It's honestly a miracle that things like this didn't happen more often in all Trek shows.

I'm not really sure what you're trying to say here. I was just trying to explain why that shit happens. I think it just happened more in Voyager because they had to bring on a lot of new writers after guys like Ronald Moore left and so there was a bit more chaos than usual.

Ronald D. Moore agreed with you
>In addition, Moore is bothered by the show’s lack of continuity. “The continuity of the show is completely haphazard. It’s haphazard by design. It’s not like they are trying desperately to maintain continuity of the show. They don’t care, and they’ll tell you flat out that they don’t care. Well, that is misreading the core audience. The STAR TREK, hardcore audience loves continuity; they love accumulating data on these ships. They love knitting together all the little pieces, and compiling lists, and doing trivia. That’s been a staple of the STAR TREK culture from the get-go. People really love the details. They love the fact that the details all add up and make one mosaic, and that the universe holds together. When you don’t give a shit, you’re telling the audience: don’t bother. Don’t bother to really learn this stuff, because it’s not going to matter next week, anything that happened this week.”The writer-producers of VOYAGER maintain that they don’t want continuity, so people can watch the shows out of order, for example, now in five-nights-a-week syndication. Says Moore, “I’ve just never believed that argument, because it seems to me that you’re just underestimating the intelligence of the audience. You’re just saying the audience is a bunch of idiots. Who is going to be watching the show in strip syndication five nights a week? People that like that show, and presumably have watched more than one show. Got forbid the stations have to run them in order. It’s an excuse that sounds plausible but is basically a way for them not to have to care about maintaining continuity, because it is tough to maintain continuity.

Voyager is my sister’s favorite Trek for a reason you splurgs
Jaxson Moore
The thing is, when the show was run by Jeri Taylor and Michael Piller, they did (more or less) keep a tighter lid on continuity, and used a rather large cast of secondary characters. When Brannon Braga, Joe Menosky and Kenneth Biller took complete control in Season 5, nothing from the first four seasons mattered anymore.
Nathaniel Gray
You don't need it to enjoy music. But you need it to understand the difference between good music and bad music. It's no surprise that people who don't care if an artist even wrote their own songs, or if a song is well-composed, typically have much worse taste than people who do care. If you want to be a top40 popfag, knock yourself out, but you'll never get as much enrichment from music as people with brains.

I too sometimes close my eyes so I don't have to read things that might upset my world view.
I don't remember seeing anything about what Moore said that leads me to believe he had any interest in 'mass appeal.' It's pretty obvious that Trek wasn't ever going to have 'mass appeal', or even the almost-mass-appeal it had during TNG's run ever again. The ratings had been sliding significantly since the end of TNG and didn't show any signs of ever recovering.
Christopher Ortiz
>REEEEE miley cyrus didn't really write Jolene!!!!! REEEEE CAN'T LISTEN

So, what exactly are your metrics for enjoying music? Do you believe it's as simple as "I like this" or "I don't like this"? Do you think that nothing is going on in your subconscious brain that marks and determines whether you like or don't like something? Just because you are trying to keep your decision making as simple as possible doesn't mean that it's as simple as you think it is. Your brain is still listening for markers that you enjoy and interpreting the finer details even when you're trying to do your 'just turn ur brain off bro' act.

This is true.
This is actually correct for the most part. Except
>Your brain is still listening for markers that you enjoy and interpreting the finer details even when you're trying to do your 'just turn ur brain off bro' act.
Most people don't really comprehend what they're listening to note for note. It's like looking at a picture but everything's blurry and all you can see is blobs of color, that's how most people listen to music.
>i understand words better than you ever will

>What am I supposed to do, turn my brain off and pretend to be impressed by guys that shred through pentatonic scales in drop D tuning even though I know a trained fucking monkey could do it with the same skill?
It's not even about whether something is hard to play, but whether or not it sounds good. Which is a vague metric. Music honestly all comes down to opinion, but what is true is that there are verifiable levels of musical proficiency, both in terms of listening and playing.

There's a lot to reply to here but I don't want to derail the thread too much. I'll just reply to the part about the White Stripes.
Jack White was popularizing Son House with his covers of Death Letter Blues in the early 2000s. That alone is plenty enough for me to heap some renown on the guy. Though their music was very stripped down and Meg was a shitty drummer certainly, Jack was great at boiling down a lot of largely forgotten musical influences in himself and putting out something that was still somehow commercial. Also, he's not the greatest guitar player in the world but he has a great feel and a good bit of soul, things which are almost impossible to quantify.
And I agree that something being hard to play doesn't make something good, not at all. But I do believe that most terrible music is horribly played and horribly overproduced and that instrumental talent can go a long way to enhancing a song that is already good.
Sebastian Foster
No, he did not. Now you can go.
Gabriel Murphy
I don't think so at all. The performances by Dorn, Tony Todd, and Hertzler were all quite serious and I never found Klingons particularly comical because of Gowron. He was an exaggerated figure but the Klingons are a pretty exaggerated culture to begin with.
Nathan Murphy
Look. Jack White and Meg White are trash. They've never played a good song in their life. That you could get on a high horse about music, then turn around and praise such absolute trash is just ridiculous to the point of parody.

Meg White is trash but Jack White is a saintly figure, user. Maybe you should give some of his stuff a second listen.

Romulans weren't so bad were they evil They weren't evil but just seemed unusally paranoid as a race.
Ryder Howard
epic!
Andrew Phillips
lol
Dominic Reed
I appreciate the effort but this is juvenile.
Adrian Perez
Romulans are one of the most complex races in ST. I think if future series went further into the distant future then exploring the Romulans would be one of the best ways to go about it.
Zachary Thompson

That alien plotline always seemed weird to me.
They built it for a long time and then it was over very quickly.
It's as if they had more content for them but decided to cancel it all.

I love Jimmie Rodgers, you uncultured swine, but just because Doc Watson hasn't been on the Ken Burns documentary yet, don't put on any airs of superiority. I actually grew up in Bristol and Doc Watson is one of the true OGs.

>hundreds of years worth of music in this world
>you listen to this shit
are you even trying/10
Julian Allen
Remixes and sampling are fine, I just don't find them as interesting as something someone made themselves. I prefer originality, or at least a fresh interpretation if someone is going to cover someone else's music.
Sampling is just stealing.
Isaac Morris
Huh I just watched that ep.
Henry Hughes
Voyager starts getting some bangers out there by season 4.
Jace Perry
Yeah I’m fat too
Nathan Williams
WOW1 NO FUCKING WAY, DOOD!!!
James Brooks
Then you haven't listened to much remixing and sampling-based music. You can make the same arguments for electronic music and against rock music, for example, with electronic music you can overhaul a sound to create something completely new, whereas rock music is just rehashing the same chords. Both arguments are dumb, judge each piece of music on its own merit, not how it was created.
Ayden Evans
I'm not fat, I'm hefty.
Ayden Evans
Don't be rude. I made this thread and I can unmake it.

Yeah I say that too

Remember when Barclay ______ that ___ on the holodeck? How did that even get on air?
Aaron Evans
This whole conversation started with anons talking about music covers which I'm totally cool with if they make it their own like White Stripes covering Dolly's Jolene. I'm not pretending to be an expert on music, it's just my opinion that I hate hearing other people's work broken into pieces and sprinkled throughout someone else's "song." Other people love that shit. To each their own.

how to play rock music
>distortion
>1-4-5 progression for part a
>2-3-4 progression for part b
>play melody two octaves higher and with more effects pedals for solo
>now you're a rock star
how to play metal music
>more distortion, less rhythm
>1-4-5 progression for part a
>2-3-4 progression for part b
>play melody two octaves higher and with more effects pedals for solo
>now you're a metal star
how to play folk music
>1-4-5 progression for part a
>2-3-4 progression for part b
>now you're a folk star
how to play delta blues
>do the same five phrases on the minor pentatonic scale while a backup guitarist plays 1-4-5 7th chords

Cooper Myers
TNG ofc
Isaac Hill
ENT, obviously.
John Brooks
Voyager. TNG is an honorable mention but just a cover of TMP’s score.
Logan Williams
This is like explaining a warp drive by saying: "you put a bubble around the ship and boom, faster-than-light travel."
There's no need to grossly oversimplify entire genres of music to try and dress up your own arguments. If you really see music like that, you might actually be autistic.
TOS or post-Worf DS9. VOY has an underrated theme as well.
Camden Rogers
Season 1-3 DS9.
David Baker
Voyager.
Ian Myers
TNG but it was a movie score so best original tv theme was DS9
Justin Wood
Preference is fine, I prefer rock music and am a rock musician, but I also know better than to dismiss electronic music out of hand for such ridiculous reasons.
Aaron Anderson
You’re wrong, but then again you’re never been right about anything.
Nathan Price
You didn't like the heavy brass additions from S4 onward? I thought they made it even better.
William Kelly
It's honestly that simple from a general technical perspective. Do you think genres don't exist? Rock music sounds like rock music because they follow specific musical axioms. If you want to be able to play different genres spontaneously, you have to understand why they sound a certain way. Obviously, there's more to music than that and the post isn't entirely serious, but it's not wrong either.
Adam Powell
Like I said, it was gross oversimplification. But if you weren't being serious, it's fine.
Sebastian Davis
The order unironically is:
VOY
DS9 (original)
TNG
DS9 (new)
TOS
STD
TAS
ENT
Jace Wright
When people say the first three seasons were boring I can see the theme song as one of the reasons why. Upping the tempo and using new shots of the station that weren't just stock footage really helped.
Aiden Scott
I love electronic music. My bitch is with creative theft not style. I grow weary of this topic.
Asher Thompson

Nice of them to acknowledge /trek/.
Ethan Thomas
There's "oh shit, we fucked up" inconsistency and there's "fuck it" inconsistency.
Nolan Long
Everything is creative theft to some degree. We're all inspired by what came before and use it to create new things. I have no problem with it really, I can think of some brilliant electronic songs that are literally just an old song sped up and levels tweaked. I really don't give a shit if anyone has a problem with this, to me, when an artist can see a way to manipulate something, even in a small way, to create something new thay sounds good in its own right, then they deserve credit for that. If anything, with electrobic music the inspiration and the root is clearer which makes it easier to credit the progenitor.
William Parker
