I am having a hard time remembering. There was no personal experience I can think of.
There's a couple of aspects I might be able to reconstruct...I was (rightfully) dead afraid of chimpanzees as a kid as well. Like chimps there is something eerie about a human shaped creature that has this 'gory' aura conveying that it is ready to chew your face off at any minute.
Additionally the Skeksis looked and sounded sick and decaying which added to the horror. Their cloth is rotting, the skin mangey and full of sickly hair and pustles.

Movie starts out with a fairly long scene with them, Emperor turns to dust (already pretty terrifying), weird trial by stone ritual, culminating in Chamberlain getting stripped by everyone while screaming as if they were tearing him apart limb from limb. As a young kid, you have no idea what's going on, what they're doing or why, only that they're really fucking scary (very far removed from anything human, decaying bird/dinosaur monsters, body and anatomy "hidden", and once you do see how they look without all of their garments, they're even more bizarre and nasty looking ).+ they're making a lot of screeching and loud noises. The puppets are so life-like. I couldn't figure out how they were possible.

Scene that spooked me most was the Chamberlain 'PLEASE MAKE PEACE' one though. The way he creeps towards the camera by the end while his voice gets more high-pitched and insistent and the music turns unnerving used to scared the hell out of me.

They don't reproduce at all, so it's a good question. They are only virtually immortal. Perhaps they don't reproduce after separating because they despise their fellow skeksis? Maybe it is pride and having progenie means that they need someone else to live after they are gone which is unthinkable for a skeksis?

My friend was bothered by them too. I personally think they add something to the character's expressions, as they have no lips to emote or articulate with.
