Yes, the thing is Albums were a whole, and singles were less relevant to the final sales of the album. Bands and musicians were free to explore, the music was meant to be heard on your room drunk or on drugs, you heard the ENTIRE A side or B side, so filler songs were meant to bridge the important themes instead of just fill the spaces between singles. Experimentation wasn't something just for the virtuoso, it was something that bands wanted to make their brand more notorious than just plain lyrics. The technical limitations also meant shitty musicians would not try to do stuff they couldn't do and lead to harsher and more complete sounds while better bands with more understanding of the tech they had on hand would do some shit that is still pretty interesting and hard to accomplish with digital sound.

The White Album was good though. The Beatles were at their best when they were completely high and/or wasted because they went all over the place in terms of sound and production. The White Album is pretty much Proto-Punk in its ethos and has genuine bangers like Helter Skelter, Dear Prudence, HiaWG, WmGGW, Sexy Sadie and the Revolutions. I agree they were shit when they actually tried arranging albums instead of shitting out songs, that's why Revolver is also pretty good. They got carried by their Production team, though. There was some fantastic production in those late albums.
