I'm not sure about that -- I'm seeing a lot of disturbing Stalinist history with all the "good guys" identified as having impossibly modern race attitudes and all the "bad guys" specifically identified as bigots, in eras where "bigotry" would be normal. HPL wrote REH a letter about different kinds of British white people being depicted wrong in an REH story, and REH took issue with a part overlapping his less than perfectly Anglo ancestry, and HPL responded by becoming more accommodating. He was married, lived in a few different cities and had a lot of friends in the niche literary world. Later in life he didn't leave the house much because he had serious health problems (which is why he died at 46).
