So the last video rental store in my area is going away in a couple weeks. The buildings were bought out by Dollar General franchise owners and will be converted to such stores.

On the bright side, I can load up on cheap blu-rays.

This is the end of an era for me. No more rental stores.

What are some of Yea Forums's memories from such stores?

I have multiple chain video stores in my city and surrounding cities that are doing well and are frequently busy. I can't relate.
I do have retro game stores. I visit them to buy a game for my xbox or ps2 once every 2 weeks. Nerds.

Other than the distinct smell of a Blockbuster I vividly remember observing people arguing with the burnouts working there for whatever reason, usually over completely meaningless shit.
There was a place inside a grocery store before that Blockbuster that exclusively rented out tapes if I remember correctly, and I liked it more but it got removed once they brought the Blockbuster in.
I always preferred Hollywood Video over everything else though.

I also preferred Hollywood and rented video games more often than movies

Where the fuck do you live man?

I usually just rented from netflix

my aunt & uncle owned a ma/pa video store back in the late 80s/early 90s, i had such good memories of going there.

There used to be a video store nearby that was a ma/pa store that was open since the early 80s. They rented VHS and CEDs and still had the majority of their original stock.

Hollywood Video was my jam. I thought Blockbuster was low rent garbage.

I actually remember holywood video, that's where we had to rent our video games/movies from once my alcoholic dad got banned from the blockbuster for renting like 20 movies and keeping them with zero intention of ever bringing them back. I liked blockbuster more but we were persona non grata on that side of town

Probably the midwest.

Could be a place where streaming doesn't work due to being an isolated rural area where there's no broadband

Well there is fast internet, but it's expensive and capped. Even fiber connections have a data cap. I pay $80 a month for 1 megabyte down.

What area of the world is it?

US Midwest.

The last rental spot in my area closed over 10 years ago. WE still have Redbox at all grocery stores but thats it

A ma & pa operating out of what was a gas station & garage back in the 50's. Reeked of dust and mildew, dimly lit and the brown carpet that was likely beige 40 years ago. New releases always in stock because everyone went to Blockbuster. Weekend $1 rentals for old movies and games. Comfy af.

Never lived near a rental store, some school mates would go to the library to get shitty scratched VHS tapes and later DVDs. Don't envy those poorfags. My family just bought those movies instead.

Never rewinding the tapes when I returned them. I oppressed wagies from a young age

I live in my state capital and we still have a few video stores here. And yes also in Midwest.

>America is the civilised nation on the planet!
>can’t get usable internet
My sides are in orbit

I live in the midwest, just outside kansas city and there are 3 video rental stores near me still open. They get by by selling CBD (and marijuana out the back) and the more CBD you buy the cheaper the movies are.

I spent a lot of time in the back room at my local store.

That's how mine were getting by.

Even when not selling CBD, the place usually had people in there, always hiring too.

Does CBD do anything? I want to try it but I don't want to waste money.

As a kid in the 80s, there was this huge mom & pop that just moved into town. Before that, all the rental places were basically just a few shelves at the back of general stores or maybe a dozen shelves with mostly new releases (which were sold in a bin right outside when they ran their course). That was the first time I got a real expansive choice and got to see films older than a year or two. I saw all the old Godzillas, the classic horror movies, some amazing oldschool sci-fi. They had nintendo games earlier than I remember anyone else renting games, and a pizza place next door. My brother always rented a game, I got a movie, my parents usually got a new release...Good times.

Everyone I know who uses it says it makes them feel chill, but not really stoned.

There was a Hollywood Video literally a block from my house. I think I rented every goddamn game they had at least once.

Depends on what you use it for. works well for some pains, some disorders like anxiety and depression, etc. Just don't expect a ton. I've seen people claim it cures dementia and autism so there is a ton of fake news out there. I have chronic back pain because it's broken, and CBD helps in large doses.

If pot is legal in your state, micro-dosing marijuana is more effective.

doesn't do much, It give you a slight feeling of happiness, sort of like a non opiate pain killer. Its pushed hard in my state since they are basically placeholders for future marijuana stores.

I used to rent VHS movies, Genesis games and SNES games from an independent rental place a couple of miles from where I grew up. There were Blockbusters in the area, but my family always went to the indi place. Then around 1996 a Hollywood Video opened a few miles away and by around 2000 the independent place went under. At this time I began renting most of my stuff from Hollywood video and branched out to Blockbuster. I really miss the experience of going out to rent stuff, but I guess it's way more convenient to be able to do it all from your PC or TV now. Still, the experience is missed.

My local CVS carries it, I think you rub it into your skin and it takes effect that way. I was interested when they first came out with it but I figured it was placebo shit meant for the elderly. Might have to rethink that.

There was a Gemstone video across the street from Blockbuster in my town.

The video store in my hometown is still there, but it's a combo hair salon, tanning salon, and coffee shop.
My parents took me there to rent movies and games in the 80s. Good times.

Ive got a few. And Im sad that theyre closing down everywhere. I have never paid for a subscription service, as I never needed to because of video stores.

When I was a kid I can remember going to blockbuster. I had to agree on a game with my brothers and my mom had to approve it before we could rent it. As such, it took a long time to even be allowed to get golden eye. Finally, we convinced her to let us get golden eye, under the promise we wouldn't shoot each other in multiplayer, just near each other.

I remember renting outland and air force one from a holly wood video with my grandpa, and he thought air force one was goofy and made fun of Harrison ford when we watched it

Later, my family started going to family video cause it was cheaper and BB was dying.
I rented a lot of movies there, from my preteens up until my 20's. The B movie selection was fantastic. My bros and I would go rent anywhere from 5-10 movies in a given week. I am convinced we were a major source of income for the store. We quit going when the new manager claimed we weren't the owners of the account when we tried to go rent some movies one week. There was an argument between us and him, and we quit going.

They went out of business earlier this year. I went to their sale. I wanted to get some movies for cheap, and sorta say good bye to the place I guess. It was a really sad experience. There was more people there than I had seen in my entire time as a member. People were picking over the store like vultures. I did the same too, but it was just sad to see and be a part of. I hadn't seen many new movies since I quit going to family video, so I got several new movies. I went and watched them with some of my family, and I was reminded of simpler times from when I was younger, renting crappy horror movies, 80s action movies, and getting the last copy of that new movie. It was a nice break from the reality of today

Now im back to not watching new movies.

it does something, though like the other guy said it has very limited effects, since the thc is what gets you high and theres practically no thc in CBD

that's just sad man, early 2000s tier shit.

wtf howd you know? my family video just became a dollar general, at least i went into the porn section once before it shut down lol. overrated tbqh

I have multiple Vintage Stock/Movie Trading Co. stores in my state. Texas.

This isn't surprising user. Video stores are still alive in the Midwest, but access to the web for people in the more rural parts of the region is making video stores die, as they can stream movies now too. Its sad, Id rather go to a video store than stream
Also, did the back room have saloon style doors? One of the family videos I went to had that

single saloon style door my man, stay gold user

>stay gold user
you as well. Sorry to hear about your video store

Ask the workers for some reccs before it closes, people with potentially decades of film knowledge are so overlooked

My closest retroish Vidya store is 20 minutes away in the next town, feels bad man

Rent Free (tm)

OP, the last video store in Hamilton Ontario (Steel City Video) closed this year after 30 years. There's nothing left and I feel empty inside!!!FACT!!!

How are these shelves organized?

>robocop 3
bro wtf?

bro you should buy as much bitcoin as possible as soon as it comes out. trust me

Alphabetically
Yeah, they make us put some dumb shit in the “favorites” section. One of the guys at corporate loves Pauly Shore, so every single Pauly Shore movie is in there.

What’s a bitcoin

you'll know in a few years. just dont forget
