pretty accurate. ive lived in and have bought heroin in the ghettos of chicago for almost 20 years now, this show nailed on some stuff that the average view wouldnt catch. the first few seasons are unparalleled as far as street drug culture goes. that bubbles guy, sometimes i feel that dude really a banged a bag right before the cameras rolled, bout to fall out any minute

If you enjoy great dialogue, realistic characters, poking fun at typical cop procedurals and the working ins and outs of a criminal organization juxtaposed with that of the police department, you'll like it a lot

I'm watching the 1st season of The Wire and I just got done watching the episode where DeAngelo teaches the younger kids chess. I was blown away! I had to watch it a couple times to really pick up on it, but did you guys realize that when he was teaching them about the chess pieces, he was really referring to THEM being the pawns! What an amazing metaphor!

It was so deep and meaningful, I am amazed by the deep symbolism of this.

Do the later seasons continue on with masterful symbolism like this? This was truly the pinnacle of storytelling that I have ever seen on a television show, and I think I can confidently say The Wire is the best show ever made without even having seen the entire series.

Also the acting is amazing. Idris Elba and Dominic West do a great job with their Baltimore accents.

This. He literally did nothing wrong, and the coming wall of automation and software was a juggernaut that no amount of crime could stop. Incredible character. Most underrated char ever.

just wanted to say, ive watched the first 2 eps recently, bubbles in ep 2 after identifying the dudes with the red hat, getting up and asking for money, walking out with a "woohoo" was one of the greatest moments in television . much obliged, this $20 can buy two, but ill get 3 with this

In a literal sense it refers to the use of wiretapping phone lines, a common tactic of the police throughout the show but especially in the first season
On a more thematic level it refers to the threads that bind different aspects of the show together, how the city of Baltimore, including its political bureaucracies and criminal organizations, are all connected by interwoven narratives

bubbles is probably the most sympathetic/likeable character in the show.

the transition from the streets we were used to in s1 to the docks in s2 can be a little jarring the first time around, but rewatching it all years later s2 is probably the best.
