You're almost right. Jason was still scary in part VI, but not afterwards. Since he was out for V, it's not a stretch that they both transformed. Jason got wrecked first only because he was around more.

Always thought Jason was cooler but the first Nightmare film scared me far more than any other.

NoES has some brilliant moments but Freddy is simply overshadowed by Jason as a slasher villain.

From there its two main schools of thought
1. He is a supernatural Spirit of Vengeance who kills out of unending hate and anger
2. he didnt drown and instead was swept into an underwater cavern or something and long story short survived on his own and lived in the wilderness for years alone. The reboot kind follows this path of Jason as a survivalist
