I never watched the animated cartoon show but I had read the short newspaper strips because our school forced us to read the newspaper. How were they different?

The show was a lot funnier but somehow even less subtle than the comic strip. They also managed to shoehorn in anime fight scenes from time to time but they were oddly enough really well made.

It's a lot less openly retrospective because of the format. You know how the strips were often him and the girl just musing to each other about a topic? Well it's more shown then told but still keeps a lot of aspects from the strip, like the jaded perspective of the protagonist.

The first three seasons of the original were good enough that I'll give the new show the benefit of the doubt and try it. But the fourth season showed how fucking terrible it can be when people miss the point of what made it great, so I won't get my hopes up.
