Is it kino?
Is it kino?
the Germans win, so yes
>the Germans win
Pretty good production quality for the time. Extremely dated by modern standards.
>>Gene Hackman's Polish accent
der Gerrrrmanz
It's a bit of an unfocused mess, but it looks good. There are more kino WW2 bridge movies.
>Yankees and Bongs are too incompetent to save Anne Frank: The Movie
Never send boys to do a man’s job.
Sir Richard Attenborough has only directed kino, which is an often overlooked fact about the man.
uh wasn't she already captured before Market Garden?
Yes, we would’ve broken her ass out Entebbe-style
>tfw no more ensemble war kino like this and longest day
I want to get off Field Marshal Montgomery's wild ride
Star studded cast and doesn’t sugar coat the operation. It’s a classic. I remember watching this with my dad and it became a big reason why I wanted to become a soldier. Super comfy and based
It was extremely dated when it came out, that's why it was badly reviewed at the time. But really it's timeless, and these days when the boomer era blurs together it stands up there with The Longest Day and Tora! Tora! Tora! as the 3 best movies of this particular type.
DIGBY
Superior
I remember renting the VCD from a local shop in my village to watch it, many years ago.
>village
Are you Dutch?
>watching bongs fuck up in ww2 made me want to go die for israel
i fail to see the connection
>die for Israel
Real rich coming from you
>Dated
It wasn't, it was panned due mostly to critics throwing a shit fit over the fact that the most expensive movie ever made (at the time) was about an infamous allied blunder
How the fuck was Monty not sacked for this debacle?
Moar
Yes, it was the last great WW2 movie.
Good, but not superior. Not even close really.
piat is such a stupid gun
Apologies for mistaking you for an American.
I feel for the poor actors that had to fire an actual PIAT. The thing works, but it's a fucking bitch to be the person pulling the trigger. Thing's spring fired, which is great because it means that you don't have to worry about backblast, but awful because it means you get belted with the recoil and it just kind of limply lobs the projectile in the general direction of a tank.
PIATs were great in Company of Heroes
I'd have a dozen engineers with PIATs blowing shit up
>world famous naturalist
>oscar winning director
>even the third one was an executive at alpha romeo
genes? parenting? luck? it seems odd to have three sons all be successful in varying fields
No, it was absolutely seen as dated when it came out.
Drive. Initiative. Opportunities. A good education. A winning attitude.
Fun fact, umbrella dude was a real dude.
Same true thing can be said about the Emanuel Brothers but I doubt you'd want to admit that because they're Jews
>we'd like to, but we can't
makes me laugh audibly every time
The first person parachuting scenes are Kino, especially the Polish one
He didn’t die in the battle either. Mad lad managed to escape back to Allied lines and continued memeing about like a true operator.
lol
Any dutchies gonna watch the parachute boys this weekend?
in canada we are taught that you guys are specifically grateful to us, but in reality you guys don't seem to be
A bridge too kino
No matter where I am or what I’m doing, I always watch this movie and Glory on September 17th.
The most dated thing about it is the soundtrack. The jovial music really doesn’t fit with the film’s intended tone.
That’s one thing modern films actually do a lot better now, use of music to convey the feeling of intensity.
>genes? parenting? luck?
Yes.
Whats on September 17?
Anniversary of Operation Market Garden and the Battle of Antietam, exactly 82 years apart
Too bad they're shit in coh 2
That first shot of the soldier firing the anti-tank weapon makes it clear how much Spielberg was inspired by it when making Saving Private Ryan.
I didn't touch CoH 2. It looks so retarded and cartoony.
Dated how
idk
SZNUR!
SZNUR!
this, we will never have kino like this again
Kino for Edward Fox’s briefing alone.
Yes the tanks aren’t ww2 but if you can see past that its absolute kino.
Is A bridge too Far the one with GI who pulls a gun on a surgeon go operate on his friend. Whole scene is one of the finest kino scenes of all time.
I heard he spared no expense
yes that was James Caan
why are the flag badges so fucking big on their shirts
It's a damn shame they never adapted Ryan's book on the fall of Berlin.
It was fucking keeeeeno
better question is why are they backwards
Bump
Silliest war movie ever made and I loved it
To this day I have only seen the German dubbed version.
>Brits are prissy and by-the-book
>Americans are down-to-earth good ol boys
>Poles are simple-minded
>Germans are incompetent ninnies
Decent battle scenes but the movie itself is horrendous.
Because when you carry an actual flag and march forward the flag is backwards.
>Waaaaah why weren't the Brits portrayed as noble knights supermen
fuck off Lindybeige
>Poles are simple-minded
Niggawhat
Hey Fatty I got a movie for ya: A Fridge Too Far
Kek
The soundtrack is perfect nigga tf are you talking about. It's a war epic. It's not supposed to be all muh gritty realism. But when it does do gritty realism at certain parts it has dramatic fitting music.
I don't know, you could say it underscores the whole attitude the british had going in that it was going to be a cakewalk, then their having to sit back and watch as their glorious easy victory deteriorates into a farce.of the most horrific kind.
The Polish guy was unironically probably the smartest officer in the entire movie
>Sosabowski: hmmm this seems like a lot could go wrong
>Browning: wtf shut up you stupid bohunk I'm in charge in here.
The only thing he did wrong was not press Browning further for his orders in writing. But I guess he thought he would have been killed anyway along with the rest of his brigade should things get FUBAR.
Operation failed because of the yanks btw
because apparently Americans are so insecure that even their uniforms is about never retreating. Bunch of retards.
>Operation failed because of the yanks
>Horrocks was a lazy ass faggot who didn’t march on Arnhem in the 12 hour window they had when Frost was still holding the bridge
Is it any good?
Sosabowski is rightfully portrayed as the most competent general
It came out in 1977. Apocalypse Now had already wrapped shooting when this came out.
>we need someone to play our German officer
>sir, Maximilian schnell has already shot the scenes while you were saying this
good, you should kill yourself
Apocalypse Now Was arguably a lot easier to film since the Vietnam War had just ended and there was plenty of surplus weapons and vehicles that could be rented for cheap.
>Apocalypse Now Was arguably a lot easier to film
let me guess, you're from a less powerful country?
Well yes, in terms of obtaining props and suitable filming locations. The producers to able to rent a lot of surplus military hardware that belonged to American allies and had the input of veterans who had recently set in the conflict (some of them were actors in the movie). With A Bridge Too Far, they had to use modern Patton MBTs as stand-ins for Panzers because there weren’t any operational examples available.
Kek
He must’ve hated being constantly typecast as a Nazi
>A Bridge Too Far, kino?
It is but its the sort of film you need to actually have an interest in history and war to appreciate because it spends a lot of time accurately portraying the battle and all the tactical, strategic and political nuance behind it.
If you just want a character driven war story and don't care as much about the history and the nuance of the battle then you'll probably find it boring.
It's the second best film about Market Garden. The scene with Browning doing escape and evasion happened, and was kino. The Brits refusing to advance because they wanted to get a brew on didn't.
Based Patton-poster
>It's the second best film about Market Garden
What’s number one?
Kino general desu
No, it went 'a bridge too far' itself with too many subplots and pov characters. You can't have a successful movie with a dozen big name actors all competing for the spotlight.
This desu
>You can't have a successful movie with a dozen big name actors all competing for the spotlight.
Uhhh... Black Hawk Down?
John Frost is a criminally underrated figure in WWII desu

What films do you recommend i should watch to get into war movies? Vietnam excluded.
One is my favorites. Great banter too
What aspect of war are you most interested in?
Digby then noticed the chaplain pinned down by enemy fire while trying to cross the street to get to injured soldiers. Digby got to him and said "Don't worry about the bullets, I've got an umbrella". He then escorted the chaplain across the street under his umbrella.
When the Germans started using tanks to cross the bridge, Digby led a bayonet charge against them wearing a bowler hat. He later disabled a German armoured car with his umbrella, incapacitating the driver by shoving the umbrella through the car's observational slit and poking the driver in the eye.[1]
How the fuck do you disable a german armored car with a fucking umbrella?
>When the Germans started using tanks to cross the bridge, Digby led a bayonet charge against them wearing a bowler hat. Where do the British find guys this insane?
>Apocalypse Now
Now that’s some kino
>this is the average American in 2019
I liked The Beast (1988)
I guess you also watch History Buffs
Black Hawk Down is shockingly accurate to the book.
Hope this works

Umbrellas were stronger back then now they are all made in China flimsy garbage
Would Mary Poppins really be able to fly with them?
Mary Poppins umbrella basically had a spitfire engine in it.

Bailey crap
This one gets me bad, probably one of the most tragic deaths in the movie. Reminds me of a story about the German 6th army encircled around Stalingrad getting an airdrop from the Luftwaffe only to find that it was filled with condoms instead of food and ammo. Shit like this must have happened all the time.
Theirs is the Glory
Sounds like my grandma. I hear its a very intense game.
>only to find that it was filled with condoms
Gonna need those for when the Russians take you prisoner
Yes, 70's were a good decade for WW2 kino
love that prop flapping around in his mouth the whole time
>I was born in Yugoslavia
>American officer who is at least 30 years old, probably older
>Yugoslavia was only 26 years old in 1944
yes
>Germans are incompetent ninnies
??? Every scene is a desperate attempt to overcome the germans who are always one step ahead.
Poor lad

Any particular conflicts you interested in?

H-How did you know?
He's referring to what it's called now. People in Lithuania who were born in the Soviet Union would say they were born in Lithuania
Well I mean Yugoslavia literally didn’t exist as a concept until after he likely moved to the United States. He’d be more inclined to say he was Croatian, Slovenian, or Bosnian because those identities have historically been much stronger than “Yugoslav”
Wut
:_;7
Godspeed laddie
F
Wait did that really happen?
No
actually look into how hard that film was to make before posting something like that ever again
he's mis-remembering the scene in stalingrad where it's full of medals
my favorite ai skirmish strategy is to lock down the chokepoints then bring in Hummel artillery
Canada is fake and gay, friend-o
>doesn't care about trying to administratively fuck over some asshole cause he expects to die in combat anyway
pretty based, desu.

I’ve been to the town where this was filmed. It was a beautiful sight.
Nice
Thx

He was born for kino.
He was born in it. Molded by it.
>this thread has been up longer than Operation Market Garden actually lasted
>no it hasn't
>yes it has
Stop lying, kike.
Out of interest what nationality were the two USAAF guys who planned the op?
Presumably Americans
I CAN STOP WATCHING TV!
No you can't
Last bump before I go to bed, hopefully Eurobros will keep this thread alive so we can keep going tomorrow.

Is it true that all the cities that Market Garden took place in are crime-infested shitholes?
