Primarily I think it's because we are full protected by our walls (among other things) from predators. So animals, though, they can kill any one human, do not pose a real threat. Things from /x/ don't give a shit about humanity's dominion over the world. They prey on us without any care for our defense or our offense and that makes them scary.
I think if you were a primitive human without the protections of civilization predators like the tiger would trigger flight or fight reactions reliably.
