It only succeeded for the literally same reason Avatar did. It was a '90s CG tech demo. If it was regular Disney animation instead then it wouldn't have got a single sequel.

Toy Story 4 is so mediocre and boring. The only highlight is that the models and lighting look good.
Sporky and the Duck/Rabbit were annoying.
The Doll mob boss was forgettable and used way too less, along with the original cast.
Buzz and Woody felt like entirely new characters with how flanderized they were.
And the W/B romance was so by the books.

I just finished watching 4 and I would rank them:

This one felt really SJWery. Bo Peep was made into a Sarah Connor and in any scene involving her Woody was a bumbling mess. And when they introduced Duke Ka-boom they emasculated the shit out of him by showing him as short and a failure at his job. They made him over the top macho as well just to drive the point home.

Buzz is equally stupid. Forky is legitimately retarded. The smart evil villain is female, her henchmen are all mute servants. The dad is shown losing his temper and the toys fuck with him so every shot involving him portrays him as either out of control of the situation, losing his temper, or an absent minded dick (walking on Bonnies toys). The mom is never shown in any negative light though.
