The story of this character is extremely interesting.
tl;dr Sony had big plans to market this character as a virtual reality actor who would appear (using the same name as her character in Final Fantasy) amid real actors. However, the technology wasn't up to it, and the plan obviously never panned out. FF: The Spirits Within was possibly just an extremely expensive marketing promotion for their virtual waifu.
