I liked Adventure Time's experimentation, and the fact they tried to convey different messages every time.
Steven Universe has exactly one plot and one message:
"feelings are important, get in contact with your own feelings, and everyone else's feelings - then the day will be saved."

Adventure time was about a million things. Futility, time, memories, letting go of the past, friendship, fatherhood, motherhood, metaphysics, and whatever autism Lemongrab has. Some problems are solved talking it out, others through fighting. Other problems just can't be solved and have to be lived with.
I like that outlook much more. Less preachy, in a way. And more coherent with the real world.

Star Vs did it much, much worse than SU and AT combined.

It's like South Park. Nothing wrong in having an overarching story but you can't have that AND make it up as you go along week by week. You can't have your cake and eat it too.
Make it episodic, or, God forbid, sit at a table, take your time, and write a goddamn satisfying story, instead of stitching together random stuff that looks cool.

One of the biggest problems with sotry driven shows is that the creators almost never have control over the duration of the show. Many times they create a story for multiple seasons and the producers only approve a few, forcing them to cut the story and leave many elements out so that it fits within the episode limit.
The opposite can also happen, where producers approve more seasons than the original creators had planned.
