I don't think you are supposed to take everything seriously, that's the point. Also the film is not that brutal and edgy. It's really funny and has interesting subtext about him as a director and it's fun to think about. The film is quite meta.
Nymphomaniac had some disturbing scenes, even more so than Jack imo but it was really funny. I think he perfected the formula with Jack. It was lighter more fun film, playing on his comedic strengths. Dogville, Manderlay etc. so many of his films are so funny yet everyone seems to take them seriously.
