just got back from watching this and quite frankly the opening scene was the scariest thing in the whole movie and thats before pennywise showed up
"scary PS1 cutscenes come on the screen sometimes"- the movie. It definitely feels like theres an hour of movie missing but I dont think that would magically make it any better. I also dont know if this is a problem of the source material or the movies but there is zero intelligent consistency to Pennywise and what he does/ what he is susceptible to. I mean if It was supposed to be an unknowable eldritch thing that might make sense but they teeter around trying to explain what he is
He gets defeated in part 1 when the kids dont fear him anymore
Every moment where pennywise is actually scary to the audience happens on a meta level (georgie, the little girl) and the kids themselves arent being actively scared like the Losers which I thought was the whole point
In part 2 the adults realize they shouldnt fear him and defeat him with the power of belief except this time for real

Theres a pretty great movie hiding inside this mess but something weird happened to it. I thought this was supposed to be the scarier and more serious movie since your main characters are adults now but its the exact opposite. The movie even starts off great by establishing the tone that its not a movie where the "good guys win" since the gay couple gets brutalized and THEN the guy gets eaten by Pennywise, not the "bullies". I think there was a potentially pretty strong core with the concept of Pennywise haunting Bill by capitalizing on his fear of little kids being killed by Pennywise but thats an absolutely tiny "side quest" in the mess that this movie is
