I don't think he was for years, but Twisted Pair seems to indicate he's become self aware. For example, the destruction of laptops is a common thing in Breen movies to the point it's sort of become an inside joke and drinking game. But in Twisted Pair, Breen, with a twinkle in his eyes, teases the destruction of several laptops but never actually ruins one, thus playing with the audiences expectations in a way only a self aware director would.
